RP3 - Help and Information

Menu

The menu has been moved from a static tree on the left hand side of the page, to being at the top of your window regardless of how far down the page you've scrolled. Try it now, we'll wait...

As you move your mouse over each menu title, a drop-down submenu will appear. In the case of the green Railpage menu, this gives access to the login form (when logged out) and the logout, reset visit time, and pertinent information for about your account (when logged in).

For our touchscreen / mobile friends, we're in the process of developing a mobile-optimised theme for you. In the meantime, our team of testing monkeys have had success in swiping your finger down the menu title, which will then bring up the sub-menu.

Forums

Herrings

You'll notice a new link underneath each forum post, named "Herring". The purpose of marking a post as a herring is simple - if you don't think the post contributes to the discussion, mark it as a herring. All herring reports are anonymous, and carry no feedback. It's designed to keep the discussion on-topic, without needing to drag a moderator in.

Like all features on Railpage, any misuse will be dealt with.

Signatures

By default, all forum signatures are hidden. To view them, enable the option under your account settings

News

You may have noticed that comments for news items are missing. In the coming months, we'll be rolling out more and more features to RP3, one of which is the ability to discuss a news article via a forum thread. Stay tuned.

Another new feature is the "Most read this week" counter. With RP2, the "Most read" news counter was an absolute counter since the site was launched - not very helpful. We've changed that - the "Most read this week" counter is reset every Sunday.

Lineside Locations

A brand new feature to Railpage is our Lineside Locations database. The purpose of it is to collate a list of lineside locations suitable for photography or train watching, created by Railpage users. It couldn't be any easier - simply plot the location onto a map, give it a name and a description), and press submit. One of the Railpage admin monkeys will approve it if suitable.

Lineside locations also pulls in geotagged photos from our Flickr group - we want your help by making sure you submit photos to our Flickr group, and geotag them.

Advertising

Yes, we have more ads. However, someone has to pay the bills...please click on them! The more people clicking on the ads, the less ads we have to plaster the site with.

Timezones

Please visit your profile and update your timezone data! We've rewritten the way timezones are handled, and it should now properly deal with daylight savings adjustments - even outside of Australia (overseas members rejoice!).

Donations

As ever, please donate to the site. Michael Greenhill, along with James Morgan and our team of trained monkeys have worked countless unpaid hours to drag this website into the 21st century. Give us a beer, and give Brian Evans a beer (or some money...!) for covering the operational expenses.

After 20 years, Railpage is still going strong. We have big plans for upgrading Railpage, and introducing a lot of new features and functionality, and making it easier to get the information you want.
