The story below comes from my discussion board, but, I thought people
at aus.rail would have some "rare" train trip accounts to talk about.
Posted by John Coyle on January 24, 2003 at 05:45:53:
By rare, I mean a dirversion of a train from it's normal route, or the
use of a rare/one of pasenger car.
I once rode the "Southern Aurora" from Melbourne to Sydney via the
Moss Vale to W'gong line, and the Spirit of Progress via the
Picton-Mittagong "loop", line, due to a derailment on the main line.
Also, my trip on the Georgia RR "mixed" from Atlanta to Augusta had a
Western Railway of Alabama 10/6 sleeping car, which was used as a day
coach! The regular coach was in the workshops, under repair.

How about an unscheduled train?
Last year I was in Perth and heading out to Stirling station from the city
on the 11:32pm train. Due to a combination of not paying attention to the
announcement and very poor signage at Stirling (not visible from the
carriage), I missed the station.
I alighted at the next station (Warwick) about 5 km further north.
The passenger info display showed a train back towards Stirling at 12:17am.
However the timetable said that this train only ran on Friday and Saturday
evenings, and this was a Thursday, so the info display and the timetable did
not match. Anyway I waited around and sure enough, the train that was not
supposed to arrive came at 12:17am. There was only one other occupant on
board (in another carriage) so he must also have missed his station!

Trains that run Fridays only are often actually the-day-before-Saturday only
, so if there is a public holiday on the Friday with a Saturday timetable,
you will find that the Friday-only train runs on the Thursday. Could this
have been the case here?

It was around the middle of October 2002 - either the 10th or 17th. Don't
think there were any public holidays then.

Was it 0017 Thursday, or 0017 Friday?

0017 Fri.
The timetable describes this service as 'Friday night/Saturday morning' only
but I caught it on Thurs night/Fri morning.

You have "rail" in the heading so I assume tram trips can be told in this
thread
W-a-y back when trams ran down George St Sydney, I was on my way home to
Leichhardt when the tram turned left off George St into Hay St. Ahead in
George St at Ultimo Road corner a tram and a car had pranged.
After turning into Hay St we turned right into Parker St, then right into
Barlow St and then left back onto George St, thus avoiding being held up by
the prang. This loop was the only one on the entire length of George St.
If the prang had occurred in any other block tram services would have been
delayed.

Probably a tad off topic but what I consider the "rarest" journey was to
Barraba by steam train in the late 60's. I was working for NSWGR at the time
and had access to free 1st class passes so I looked for somewhere to use one
and Barraba was it. What a magic little place that was(/is). Spent the day
there, most of it was in the water at the local swimming pool, and met
somebody that had a major influence in changing the course of my life.
Caught the train back that evening to Tamworth and then Sydney. A very rare
and magic trip.

In July, 1994 (In my earliest days yet), my XPT from Brisbane to
Sydney went via the North Shore line instead of the Northern Line.
The XPT went right through to Redfern, before changing ends and moving
into Platform 1, Central.
Also in April - 2000, my V-SET from the Blue Mountains to Central was
switched onto the Cumberland line and ended up at Merrylands! (I
wasn't much of a railfan back then) The driver and guard swapped ends
and we arrived into Sydney Terminal 10mins late, arriving somewhat
'backwards'.

Happens quite a bit when the Northern Line is closed. I've seen goods
and V-sets on the North Shore Line.

Goods only goes thru when the North Shore line is closed, because they can't
get through Town Hall station

Sunbury and back in V/Line's last full first class carriage on a suburban
ticket about 11 years ago. The 15.15(?) Sunbury was rostered for the famous
MTH set, which was usually a scratch set of anything available. On this
occasion it was 263AZ (just off sg and not yet converted to an ACZ), an ACZ
and a PH. Hauled by B65!
Cheers

3 absolute Gems
ca. 1985 - standing on Campbelltown platform as a old-livery 48 and
candy-coloured non-aircon carriages came in forming the return leg of
the Cooma Mail. I think the train ceased shortly after this date.
This was actually a train available to suburban passengers so I did
jump on and had the wonderful priviledge in modern times of windows
open, 48 noise and smell coming in, and extra treat of via Fairfield
which if IIRC was rarer then.
December 1988 - Ipswich to Esk. The mixed to Yarraman had ceased about
a week earlier, with the excuse of a landslip north of Toogoolawah.
The rail motor itself expected to cease in January following. Driver
let me sit in front the whole way. Swaying and rocking through heavily
grassed track. Stopped for huge parcel drops at Fernvale and Lowood.
Seemed to be sitting on about 40km/h and trip took forever. Actually
glad to get off in Esk because sick of the rocking although now regret
never saw Toogoolawah. Driver said locals preferred a bus becuase it
dropped them closer to town and faster. Bloody Locals!
1987 last train to Yarram. Great fun particularly the speculation on
the condition of the track between Welshpool and Yarram which
apparently hadn't been used for about 6 months. A great experience,
the further along the line from Dandenong the worse the conditions
got, from Leongatha which went down to freight standard, to an
absolute crawl over the Meeniyan trestles, past Barry Beach Junction
which was the last regular freight service at that time, past
Welshpool which had received the odd wagon, past Alberton with a
couple of GYs left in sidings that had to be collected before closure,
and finally into Yarram which was very derlict, including the trestles
outside the town. The driver got up more nerve to go faster on the way
back. So sad, when you see pulled up past Leongatha and even there is
only preservation at the moment. On the other hand Cranbourne now sees
more trains than it did then.

I suppose one of my "rarest" was travelling north to Alice Springs via the
standard gauge Maree Mixed & thence the 3' 6" "Dirty Ghan". a long &
interesting slow rail journey.A rare treat of a journey full of interesting
characters. I must publish my reminices about this on John's Mixed Trains
Yahoo Group some day.
