I have heard from the guys at dorrigo that 3813 will become the second 3820. Static preservation. Nice too see another mighty 38 around NSW!! Yes well with 3822, catch points and loco wheels don't mix well!! Just think The Rev, FIVE 38 CLASS LOCOS, NOOOOOOOOOO

pic of 3820 on arhs tour late 72 on my page.
This tour ran to morrisett( i think), then doubled with 5112,replaced by 6042 which doubled with 5112 to broadmeadow then double garrats to martins creek
3820 thenreturned from Newcastle to Sydney.
Dull overcast day....instamatic struggled to cope with light but I got some pics!

| Quote: | | I still believe that 3822 would have had a chance in preservation if it was not wrecked from being driven through open catch points |
Not really, as it really had as much chance as 3827. Both were being used frequently on ARHS or RTM tours, and in the end 27 met the torch.

Well, SMR30. You are right about how long it will be for 3820 to steam again. aside from 3642 and 5910, there's also all the upgrading of the museum, 3085 is in the works bay, so is 1219, 3214, J&A Brown 4 and 5, plus numerous carriages under overhaul, along with the cosmetic restorations of the Silver City Comet and 6042. There's also the fact that 3820 donated numerous boiler fittings to 3801 in 1986. It could be possible to have two 38s running with the RTM. 3801 could work for allocated periods, while being given routine servicing [url]between periods of service and 3820 could fill in for 3801 and vice-versa. We can always dream

If we just step back from the argument for the moment, Is there really a demand for a third C38 in NSW.
Has anyone ever considered taking 3830 somewhere outside of NSW? a-la R766 style.
I do know that the flying green condom came over here in the 80's but perhaps its time for something else to wander over the border.

3830's already been south of the border to Melbourne on the 'Millenium Aurora' tour. 3642 doubled up with 3801 for the 'Pirrinari Whyalla' tour in 1972 to SA (correct on spelling of the name if needed). 3820 went to Melbourne with 3801 in 1973 on the first steam hauled train to go from Sydney to Melbourne. 3813 went to Port Augusta on the 'Western Endeavour' tour.

3820, on a Newcastle - Gosford pass, 20 mins down at Awaba when I was offered a cab ride after photographing it. Driver said with a grin 'hang on, we're making up time'. At Ourimbah had to wait a minute or two for the timetable to catch up. B R I L L I A N T Then a relatively sedate run to Gosford. I never cabbed an express or a mail but this will do as a sampler.
But if I had $1,000,000 to spend on a a steam loco I would restore / add any possible innovation to 3616 including a CR tender and optimise for tender-first running (100Km/h) rather than restore 3820.
Another interstate run, of sorts. IIRC 3813s last run was the tour to Brisbane in January 1973 (open to correction).

Regarding that trip to Brisbane with 3813, just prior to the trip it had a hot big end bearing. It was repaired but there were still doubts about its reliability particularly as it was going on a long trip. Consequently, the crew were told to flog it up the Beecroft bank and give the bearing a good workout. The crew took the instructions to heart and as a result it was one of the fastest climbs I have ever recorded and furthermore it was done with the maximum load for a 38 class. The sound was magnificent. If I recall the train was stopped as Thornleigh to check on the bearing and fortunately all was OK.
Ah fond memories!!

Well J&A Brown No.4 (a.k.a NSWGR 20n) is two locos up on road 5 undergoing a cosmetic restoration. I suppose now you're going to say it's not in the works bay.

Yes... On the first evening many acquaintances and others talked about the climb up through Epping. I got on at Hornsby. When I got home my Mum said they had heard it, south of the hwy in Wahroonga.
