To all Railpage Australia™ members,

Text, chat and 1337 speak
Railpage Australia™™™ has a policy on text and chat speak. Using abbreviations - such as station codes instead of their actual names - is simply not on. Given that this site is for everyone, not just the hardcore enthusiasts, it is important that everyone can follow what you're saying without having to disrupt the flow of conversation to get someone to decipher your message. It is also widely considered to simply be a case of laziness.

SMS/Chat language is also disallowed. Not everyone here is prepared to read your post and figure out what you're on about when you say "omg tngra blu up 2day dere wz bits evrywhr. kewwwwwll!!!1111" True, that's an extreme example, but the time it takes someone still learning how to use a keyboard to type "Tangara" instead of "tngra" is negligable. It also boosts your reputation as a serious poster.

In light of this, excessive or consistant use of text and chat speak will incur a small warning, which will increase for repeat offenders.

This is not an all-out ban on abbreviations. Ones such as "DoI", "VIC", "QR", and along with abbreviations such as "Assoc." (when it forms part of a name, example "Heritage Railway Assoc.") are all fine where necessary.

We direct you to http://www.railpage.com.au/f-t11307362-0-asc-s0.htm for more discussion on this.

Regards,

Railpage Australia™ management.

I loathe these - 'u', 'wot', 'lol', 'gr8' . Also typing 'your' meaning 'you're' gets annoying quickly

Well done - to speak in codes, jargon and text talk is simply bad manners. Unfortunately the usual few will take no notice.

We should all remember that there are many local, interstate and overseas readers of Railpage Australia™ to whom the various codes and abbreviations used by a minority of posters means absolutely nothing.

We should also remember that in recent years there has been a great deal of location, procedure and system renaming (much of it simply for the sake of change I must say) so that some simple well known abbreviations like ES (electric staff) have been replaced with other lesser known 'gobbledook' acronymns.

The key principle to me is that we should all try to post in a form that you, yourself, would like to read a post assuming that you knew almost nothing about the subject.

In case anyone's wondering, this is NOT a new request. There have been other threads like this - but the moderators feel it's time to remind everyone again. Sighs. "To all you fans who think we have the coolest job - think again."

On this board (or any of the others that I frequent), I have never induldged in SMS or chatspeak - I can never comprehend the latter with all its "....z0rs1111" bull-smeg - and am not terribly interested in learning.

However, I do admit to using a few truncations of words here and there (such as thanx), and some of the old veteran internet acronyms such as IMHO (in my humble opinion), IIRC (if I recall correctly), ISTR (I seem to remember), AFAIK (as far as I know) and of course, good ol' LOL, ROFL & ROFLMAO (these last three should require no explanation).

I hope that such as I have described are allowable, and will continue to be.

Thanks trainfreak, for bringing this subject up again Clap - a timely and necessary reminder Smile

Not to mention how commonly the word 'smeg' gets used in this forum. We have rules against that too.

And the reason this rules exists (displaying the image multiple times wastes time and bandwidth) Images are often included in quotes.

Actually, your browser only loads the image once. The real reason the rule exists is because the long quotes are BLOODY ANNOYING.

Yes, I have to say that smeg should be changed to something rail related instead. I'm not into Red Dwarf and suspect many don't even know the connection.

Why don't we change the filter to show RAIL instead of smeg (Rail as an example....)?
