The Great Escape, 8.30pm Friday on Seven. You have to wait until near the end, but there is some good German steam action.

Wild Wild West, 8.30pm Saturday on Nine. There is a recreation of the "golden spike" ceremony.

Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, starts 7.30pm Sunday on ABC. I'm told this is an excellent series. Includes the SS Great Eastern, the world's first iron steamship designed by I.K. Brunel, and the (US) Transcontinental Railroad.

Set your VCRs for this one.

Rocket and its Rivals - 2.05pm Monday 30/9 on SBS.

Quote:
Rocket And Its Rivals tells the exciting story of innovation and entrepreneurial brinkmanship which led to George Stephenson's Rocket becoming the most famous locomotive ever, when it was chosen to pull the world's first passenger train. Stephenson's Rocket sparked a worldwide revolution when it steamed ahead of its rivals at the Rainhill Trials - but should the history books be rewritten? More than 170 years after the world's most famous locomotive competition, a team from the National Railway Museum took part in a major new experiment to discover whether Rocket really did deserve its place in history.

Did anyone catch that movie "Final Run" on Ch10 yesterday arvo at 12pm?

Being stuck in study, I knew nothing about it until the last half hour having lunch, and so missed the rest.

Seemed alright, but abit typical of all other action movies involving trains. Canadian Mountain passenger train, something happens to loco/drivers, train going downhill uncontrollably, hero has to seperate train and loco, and crash the loco, but get out of it intime by clinging onto a helicopter, etc.

hey guys,

i bought "The Train" starring Burt Lancaster on DVD the other day for $14.95 at Big W. Its not a bad movie, black and white, its bout a painting train run by the nazi's. the paintings are french and the nazi's are tryin to get the paintings into germany. they try and stop the train by blowin up the tracks, untieing the tracks from the sleepers, and there is one where they crash a steam loco into another steam loco, then after all that another steam loco crashes into the rear of the crashed one, its a good movie.

back to "on the beach" i could be wrong here, but is that the movie with jacquline mckenzie and grant bowler in it? if it is, i dont think it was K153 they used, i think u will find it was D3 639, it was filmed at talbot. after they finished shooting all the scenes with the D3, it went back to ballarat and the next day J515, GM36 and T378 went to Mildura. I was on this train workin and we had a bloke who was on the D3 the day b4 shootin the scenes.

I have recently watched on cable TV a doco on a train crash. It is to be repeated, and the details are:
'Seconds from disaster'

National Geographic channel [cable TV].
Quote:
Derailment at Eschede. The new high speed Inter City express [ICE], broke all records in 1991. It was regarded as one of the safest modes of transport until it became involved in the worst train crash in European history.

This happened in 1996 from memory, and is a pretty good doco which includes the briefest of history on the ICE train, and includes good graphics to help explain what led to the crashand how it unfolded, and what the Deutsche Bahn did to safe guard future train travel.

According to my program, the next times for this program on the national Geographic channel for this week are:
Sun 7/11 @ 1700 & 2230hrs

On Monday night, the series will look at the Amtrak Sunset Limited and the worst crash on Amtrack rails:
Quote:
Wreck of The Sunset Limited. The Amtrak Sunset Express, a double-decker train that prides itself on luxurious, stress free travel, but 47 people lose their lives in the worst disaster in Amtrak history.

Mon 8/11 @ 1930 & 2330hrs
Tues 9/11 @ 1200hrs
Thurs 11/11 @ 2030hrs
Fri 12/11 @ 0030 & 1300hrs.

I saw Polar Express last night. Not bad.

You see lots of detail of the (animated) steam train, which looked pretty accurate to this gunzel (who wouldn't be able to pick faults in a steam cab anyway). Smile

The token obnoxious kid on the train was a gunzel! Sad (Well, at least a know-it-all including knowing that the loco was a Baldwin whatever built in 1931 (from memory) etc. etc.). By the way, I wonder why Santa, living at the North Pole and travelling around the world, has an American-style steam train??

Ever see a steam train do a handbrake turn? You see it in this movie! True! (Think Lake Baikal for a clue.)

The grades were a touch steep for a steam train though--in fact some made the Katoomba Scenic Railway look flat!

And I'm sure that there was a continuity problem or three with the number of carriages on the train.
