What we need is a rail vehicle that can serve the street from a low floor level and can serve high level railway platforms. Maybe an internal lift would need to be included for wheelchair passengers.

B1.2001 orginally had dual height entrance steps for this purpose, but in those days, only high level plafroms were the ame height as the vehicle floors. Such a vehicle would be able to provide level boarding at all stops (which didn't matter in 1987), but level boarding is need at all stops now for accesability reasons. Sure, you could have lifts, but level boarding is quicker easier and more dignified.

What I meant was part of the tram being high-floor and part of the tram being low-floor with a lift (and steps for able bodied persons) between the two parts. This would ensure that level boarding is available from both street level and high railway platforms.

The idea seems to have existed for a couple of decades but it's a shame that it has only been applied rarely. We need to have more tram-train applications.

It's an even bigger shame that the idea wasn't thought of in the early years of tramways.

Ah but it was. Look at any number of American interurbans, some of which even still exist in some form today. They frequently used large high speed multiple unit cars, with street trackage in the city centers and private right of way in the suburbs. Probably the closest thing we ever had to them here was the Glenelg line in Adelaide, though on a smaller scale.

A related thread started before this one is on one of my own proposals, the Williamstown light rail.
