Well it would not change a thing for me, as I use my real name on here, but as I am pensioned off I can say pretty much what I think of my ex employers if I want to. The only one I would not mouth off at was my last boss, who was a very close friend and a railway gunzel to boot. Alas he died a year or two ago, and he is missed! Vale Allan!

By way of illustration of what is dragging us down HERE is a perfect example posted only today of bad manners and etiquette.
We are permitted anonymity and have some expectation that this will not be compromised by others. Yet here we have one member quite clearly posting the full name and employment details of another and apparently as a dummyspit reaction to what was a perfectly fair and reasonable comment made earlier.
I have, incidentally, taken the liberty of copying this to the moderators for their attention.

I just know PClark will have a go at me for this but here goes, in any discussion there are two sides, but some on here only want to see one side, their's!
They will not accept the fact that they could be wrong or mis-informed etc, but carry on as if they have made god or something. They should get a life as even the experts make mistakes, ask any of them and they would tell you that they have made some beaut's over the years. This is put down to learning, and you try not to do it again.
To come out and print some one's personal details on a public forum like this could leave you with an expensive court case and most probably some retribution against the site if they left it there. Good god whatever became of brains, or do we all have to think not only for our selves but for others as well.
If you can't be bothered thinking then do not post anything, otherwise you will end up with your foot in your mouth and a steel tipped boot somewhere else!
PClark and I had a good slanging match on here a while back, but I do not hold a grudge against him that much that I would out his personal details on here, in a few months both of us will have forgotten it complety probably and just get on with our lives.

In my opinion I feel people (namely the gunzels and younger folk) would think twice about what they say, and who they think they are discrediting. I remember one thread in the P&T forums about a 3801/3830 trip via Robertson, and one young gunzel proceeded to tell both the Moss Vale Signalman and the former 3801 Ltd Ops Manager that they had no idea what they were on about. Of course they are under usernames, and only the more regular visitors would have been aware of this but it still stands as a good example of some particular problems in that respect.

You have a point there MrNathan, but as this is really a gunzel forum does it really matter. If they cannot do what every gunzel want's, what good are they. Next they will want head on prangs arranged to get that once in a lifetime photo! Just being sarcastic there!
You are right of course, some people on here and some other places should keep a civil tongue in there heads, not only the young one's though, there are a few middle aged people that have problems as well, I would probably get lumbered in there by at least one person on here!

Interesting!
I started a similar thread a couple of months ago, ( it was called Manners maketh Man), so you will understand that I completely agree with the request for good manners, and attention to the rules of civilized debate.
Occasionally I read something and wonder what dill wrote it, but I don't feel the need to put that sentiment on to the thread. I read; if I like it, I continue; if I don't like it, I move silently on. But I do fail to understand people's need to abuse anyone - what does it achieve? This is a terrific forum, and I have learned a great deal from it, despite being well over 60. Isn't enjoyment the name of the game?

I was made aware of how childish it came across (amongst other things), so I picked up my game. If I can do it, why can't everyone else? It doesn't take enormous amounts of brainpower to learn how to spell and properly phrase yourself, and it only takes a little bit more to learn grammar and sentence structure.
There should be no excuse for poor spelling. There is a spellcheck function available on RP, not to mention spellcheck functions in word-processing software (Word, Open Office, etc) and online dictionaries. Given all that, the only excuse - other than mental disabilities - is laziness.
I can think of a number of excuses some of our members might make for their poor spelling or grammar. Let's run down the list- Dropped out of high school
Not my problem, you deal with it. I dropped out of high school too, and I'm managing fine
- I'm still in school, I'm only just learning this stuff!
Then maybe you should be spending more time studying your English papers, as it's clearly not working out for you...
- Computers confuse me!
The keys are infront of you. Holding the Shift key changes the case of the letter you then press. It ain't rocket science, mate.

mate, it has tobe considered that for the overwhelming majority of gen Y'ers, we have known nothing but a life with internet, convenience etc all, so are conditioned to a lifestyle if instant gratification
the flipside is that of those who do not have that experience, yet desire to learn and share their common interest to ours within this site
prosecution or rehabilitation mate ?
i'd rather people learn thru human error and humility, than that of outdated methodology such as barbaric public practices
PS i know that im far from perfect, yet a conscious effort is made and is that not all that can be asked of someone ?
PPS TLD™ , why is public embarresment neccesary, when we have a feature called Private Messaging ?
i am sure you will agree that it is afterall only courteous to invite someone aside to politely note a possible issue/grievence/concern etc all !

If I am concerned about a PM somebody has sent me, then and only then will I respond via PM. However, if they have had a go at me in public, or if they are just being a goose in public, I will respond likewise. I think that is reasonable enough. We have enough cowards and backstabbers on here without my joining them.
I've been pretty lucky that most people on here have respected this, and appear to operate the same way themselves. One or two scum haven't, but I saw them off readily enough.

I am beginning to notice though, one particular member in here who currently berates others for not revealing their true identities, and this annoys me somewhat.
As far as I see it, this is a public forum; and because of that, all and sundry can join. Along with people with honest intentions, there are idiots out there hell bent on causing mishief to individuals, and that is why I prefer the absence of personal information.
And, yes, I have said in the past where I volunteer, but not who I am, and my peers know who I am in here-that is enough. I dont see why I sould tell all and sundry who I am.......in fact the main reason is exactly the same as a major TR who recently changed their pesonnel name badges from christin name + surname to just christian name purely because they had a case of a deranged passenger noting down names and then going home and using the phone book, ringing the volunteers who he got the names of, and harrassing them.

And that scenario is exactly the reason why many call centres and customer service environments will instruct their staff to only identify themselves by their first name.
Infuriating though that can sometimes be it is intended to protect the staff from the inappropriate and sometimes malicious actions of some others.
I choose not to reveal any more of myself than is available simply because I do not wish to field unsolicited email, phone and message enquiries, nor do I wish to advertise to anyone and everyone who reads these pages exactly who I am.
I have nothing except my personal privacy to hide but I value that privacy and the ability to share my personal details with only those whom I choose, and not, as xxxlbear astutely puts it | Quote: | | one particular member in here who currently berates others for not revealing their true identities | .
I respnd to any and all reasonable requests and enquiries made privately to me but I am not an information service nor will I rise to any bait or flame and neither do I respond to messages seeking only to identify me personally (as in "who are you really?") or unreasonable demands for information (such as "you must know, why won't you tell me?")
I offer respect and good manners and expect something approaching that in return.

As you have stated in the past mate, there are times for softly.softly approach and time for weilding a BIG stick!
You've made your view that stick weilding is your prefered methodology thou, and i respect your right to hold that opinion, yet have to disagree to an extent upon that view mate...

I don't have a lot of time for michaelgreenhill, but that post was excellent. Keep writing more like it!
Dori.dori - I don't find it acceptable for so-called generation Y or any other generation to l33t or whatever substandard form of communication they post.
It should be made a warning-able offence on this board.
Speaking of which, why are warnings not being handed out anymore? No wonder compliance has gone to the dogs. I'm down at 5% at the moment, so clearly the mods are not doing their jobs.
