What are the specs of the server that Railpage Australia™ is running on? Is it shared hosting or a VPS or dedicated?

So how are things coming with RP3 ? Smile

Back to the original question.

I noticed in the answer in June that there might be new servers. FANG is now no more, rest his poor soul. Son of FANG, or whatever the new server is called seems to be feeling the pinch.

If the servers can't run RP2, will they run RP3? My experience of new programs is that they are normally more demanding of computer resources because they incorporate another raft of features that a man never uses. The nerds who developed them just feel good that it can do something more, whether it is vital or just a good idea.

Sorry "nerds", I appreciate your efforts. Why don't you institute a compulsory fee to use the site? I suppose that is a bit radical and I will be branded a traitor and un-Australian, but really too many people are lazy like me and keep forgetting to make a voluntary contribution. If it's compulsory then you can't just "forget".

John

An interesting issue which deserves reflection. I recently purchased additional server space; progressively moving all the images over to that server. That costs $5 per month but does not reduce delivery terabyte cost to Railpage Australia™. Images place a considerable load on the RP servers, and I wonder if one idea would be to make subscription hosting for images available on an RP server and thus generate base income to service delivery and server cost.

I wonder if this is part of the subscription only elements that MGH™ has mentioned?

RP2 has a lot of old and inefficient code, that will be greatly improved on with RP3, so it should handle the load much better Smile

Good onyer MGH™. I love to see an optomist. Of course not for a minute do I doubt that it will be better with RP3. Laughing

I sent you some dough, well not to you but to IO Pty Ltd. Now I can suggest obligatory fees with a clear conscience that I made a donation. Works out to about 10c per post. Shocked

There's another idea to slow down the post whores. Charge 'em 10c a go. Laughing

One thing to invest time into is investigating use of Zend Optimiser + MEMCache to improve performance with less server side calls.
