| Quote: | Train hits fallen tree in Chiba
CHIBA -- A train hit a fallen tree on the JR Musashino Line on Tuesday morning, the railway operator said.
At around 10:10 a.m., a Musashino Line local train bound for Fuchu-Honmachi in western Tokyo from Kaihin-Makuhari in Chiba hit a tree that had fallen onto the tracks in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, according to East Japan Railway Co. (JR East).
Nobody was injured in the accident. The train resumed operations after stopping at the scene for about five minutes.
However, the driver of another train found a branch of the tree was stuck to the overhead wire, prompting the railway company to temporarily suspend services on the line to remove the branch.

| Quote: | JR East to introduce 'super first class' on bullet trains
An existing model of the bullet train on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line.
East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) is set to introduce "super-green cars," equivalent to first class on international flights, on its Tohoku Shinkansen Line bullet trains, company officials said.
JR East intends to initially connect such luxurious carriages to only three of its bullet trains using new-model cars when the Tohoku Shinkansen Line is extended beyond Hachinohe Station in Aomori Prefecture to Shin-Aomori Station at the end of the 2010 business year. It will then increase the number of trains with super-green cars.
Super-green cars will be more luxurious than existing green cars.
The new-model bullet trains that are being developed are designed to travel at a maximum of 320 kilometers per hour. However, they will be initially operated at lower speeds. Their maximum speed will be raised to 320 kilometers per hour by 2013.

| Quote: | Woman injured as train takes off with cane stuck between doors
An elderly woman fell over and was injured after the doors of a train closed on her cane, and the train took off without the conductor noticing, railway officials said.
Keio Corp. officials said that the 87-year-old woman was boarding a train at Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station on the Keio Line in Tama, western Tokyo, at about 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, but the 56-year-old conductor failed to notice her and closed the doors, trapping the handle of her cane between two of the doors. The woman fell over, bruising her knee.
Since the handle of the cane was only 15 millimeters wide, below the width that sets off door alarms, the train took off with the cane still stuck between the doors. It was not until the train arrived at the next station that railway workers realized what had happened.

Thieving train spotters are a major pain in the caboose
By GEOFF BOTTING
Weekly Playboy (April 4)
In the weeks before the historic Miki Railway shut down forever, about 1,000 train spotters and other rail enthusiasts showed up each day to take a final ride along the line.
The picturesque train service in Hyogo Prefecture ran for nearly a century. Yet the aftermath of its final run at the end of last month left a bitter aftertaste that marred a long history. Visitors had pilfered numerous items from the trains' carriages and stations. Number plates in carriages were pried off, evidently with hammers and chisels, while some of the quaint unmanned stations along the line had been vandalized.
"We started to post guards from the start of March," a railway-security official tells Weekly Playboy. "At first, we had problems with pushing and shoving in the carriages and on the platforms . . . and then we had to keep our eyes on the railway fans after cases of thievery came to light."
Could this be right? Violent and thieving train spotters!?
Weekly Playboy answers in the affirmative. Though usually seen as harmless and mild-mannered, some train spotters can be a dangerous and unruly bunch. The case in Hyogo Prefecture, it should be noted, is not isolated. A number of historic train lines have been targeted by thieves and the sites of antisocial behavior in recent years.
Just before the termination in March of the JR Naha and Akatsuki sleeper services, which for decades linked the Kansai and Kyushu regions, someone absconded with a metal head mark — a metal disc bearing the train service's insignia — from one of the trains. Another head mark disappeared from a sleeper car of the Sakura service, just before it was shut down in 2005.
A train enthusiast who often appears in the media, Hirohiko Yokomi, describes two basic types of train troublemakers.
"One group steals because they really want the stuff. The second group plans to sell the items to shops or put them on auctions. These ones aren't collectors or geeks, but they do understand the value of the goods they're stealing. So these people aren't fans but thieves," he says.
Even so, train spotters don't have to be thieves to be a major pain in the caboose, says the magazine.
In February last year, a restored D51 steam locomotive, which was making its first run in 18 years, was forced to make several emergency stops when train-spotting photographers positioned themselves on, or dangerously near, the tracks.
At other events, mobs of the geeks have been known to cut down trees along railways to get a view of oncoming trains. They also yell at other visitors for blocking their view or, worse, violently shove them out of the way.
Yuko Kimura, a "train idol," which is a sexy young emcee who appears at public train-related events, can testify about how annoying some train spotters can be.
"Once, when I was riding the Fuji sleeper express, a sign indicating the car number and one showing the trains' direction were stolen. . . . The conductor just shrugged," she says.
"I can understand why they would want these things, but they can always see them in a museum, and I also wish they'd think about what's going to be left for the future generations of railway fans."

| Quote: | JAL group worker arrested for damaging ticket gate barrier at monorail station
A JAL Maintenance Service Co. employee who deliberately broke a ticket-gate barrier at a Tokyo Monorail station has been arrested on suspicion of damaging property, police said.
Arrested was Fumiaki Matsumoto, 61, a contract worker for JAL Maintenance Service.
"I had problems at work and with my family," police quoted Matsumoto as saying when they questioned him over his actions.
Investigations accuse Matsumoto of breaking a barrier on an automatic ticket gate at Seibijo Station at about 10:05 p.m. on Saturday. After he passed through the ticket gate and the barrier closed, he allegedly pushed his rear against it, breaking the barrier.
Police said that two other incidents at the station in which ticket-gate barriers had been broken and pasted with glue had occurred at the station since March. An investigator keeping watch at the scene immediately arrested Matsumoto following the latest incident.

HANNAN, Osaka -- A junior high school girl died after jumping in front of a train at a railway station here on Monday in an apparent suicide, police said Tuesday.
At around 3:45 p.m. on Monday, the 13-year-old, second-year student at a private junior high school in Wakayama jumped onto the tracks of the Nankai Railway's main line at Hakotsukuri Station in Hannan, and was hit by a train that was passing the station, local police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators suspect that she committed suicide, noting that what appeared to be a suicide note believed to have been written by the girl was left on a bench on the platform.
"I enjoyed practicing judo but I wasn't able to become strong. Thank you very much for supporting me even though it was a short period of time," the note partly reads.
A purse and shoes believed to belong to the girl were left on the bench.

| Quote: | Train passengers hit jackpot as ticket machine gives too much change
NAGOYA -- Passengers on a subway line received an unexpected treat when an automatic ticket vending machine at a station here gave them more change than they were entitled to due to human error, local authorities said.
Large bills, including 10,000 yen and 5,000 yen notes, were mistakenly supplied into a ticket vending machine instead of 1,000 yen bills as change at Hisaya-Odori Station on the Nagoya municipal subway line last Friday, city officials said.
As a result of the error, passengers buying subway tickets got more change than they were entitled to from the ticket vending machine at the station in Nagoya's Naka-ku. The error cost the station 252,000 yen, city officials said.
The municipal government said the error apparently occurred due to a mistake by a 57-year-old assistant stationmaster who was in charge of supplying the machine with bills.
Ticket vending machines at the station cannot distinguish between 1,000 yen bills and larger notes, such as 10,000 yen and 5,000 yen bills, when the machine gives change to ticket buyers, according to officials.
The assistant stationmaster supplied the machine with larger bills at the station on Friday morning from a sack containing cash that had just been collected from ticket vending machines, instead of from a sack containing smaller bills for change.
At around 1:15 p.m. the same day, three station employees noticed that sales from the vending machine were lower than usual. The station also received a call from a passenger saying that extra change may have been paid.
It is unknown how many passengers received larger bills as change from the vending machine.
"It is the first time that we lost cash in this kind of manner," said a representative of the city's transportation bureau.
The assistant stationmaster was also puzzled by his error, saying, "I don't know why I made such a mistake."
After receiving a report from the city, local police are looking into whether they can press misappropriation charges against passengers who made off with the larger bills as change.
The city will examine how it will punish the assistant stationmaster and how it will reimburse the funds.

Trains troubles delay 600,000 commuters
From correspondents in Tokyo
April 10, 2008 08:44pm
Article from: Reuters
A FIRE and a signal fault delayed more than 600,000 Japanese commuters today, with thousands forced out of their carriages to walk along the tracks in the rain.
Trains stopped running on the Chuo Line, one of the most crowded routes through the Japanese capital, after a fire at a railway facility, a spokesman for operator East Japan Railway said.
Commuters jumped out of trains and formed long lines on the rails in the rain to walk to the nearest station, TV news reports showed.
By the end of the day, more than 500,000 passengers would have been affected by the cancellation of 411 Chuo Line trains and delays to 50 more, with services on the line only restored around 5pm local time, East Japan Railway said.
"We apologise deeply for troubling commuters and all other customers with the stop of the Chuo Line," spokesman Osamu Kawanobe said.
A broken signal on the similarly crowded Yamanote line that rings central Tokyo delayed another 120,000 passengers during the morning rush hour, the company said.
That problem was fixed within two hours.
About 10 million people commute to work or school in Tokyo.

| Quote: | 500,000 delayed by Chuo Line fire
The Yomiuri Shimbun
Passengers walk along and across the tracks after getting off a train that stopped near JR Nishi-Kokubunji Station in Kokubunji, Tokyo, at about 9:15 a.m. Thursday.
About 500,000 passengers suffered long delays as train operations on the JR Chuo Line were suspended between Tokyo and Takao stations for about seven hours on Thursday due to a fire at an electrical substation near JR Kokubunji Station in Kokubunji, Tokyo.
According to East Japan Railway Co., train operations on the Chuo Line were suspended from about 7:55 a.m. and resumed at 3 p.m. During the day, 411 train services on the line were canceled, JR East said.
With the substation taken out of use, the number of trains services provided once operations resumed was only 40-70 percent the scheduled number due to the lower available voltage, according to the company. This meant trains on the line remained crowded for the rest of the day.
According to police, the fire occurred at about 6:30 a.m., causing damage to the substation's cables and an old signal station adjacent to the substation. JR East ceased the transmission of electricity from the substation out of concern the fire might cause a short circuit. The substation in question transforms alternating current of 22,000 volts into direct current of 1,500 volts.
Eight trains were brought to a standstill between Tachikawa and Musashisakai stations. Five of them stopped between stations, forcing about 20,000 passengers to get off the trains and walk along the tracks to nearby stations. Ten people became sick in the process with six of them taken to hospitals.
The JR Sobu-Chuo Line, which runs between Mitaka and Chiba stations, was able to provide its regular services.
International Christian University and Asia University, both of which are located near Musashisakai Station, canceled all classes due to the temporary cessation of Chuo Line operations.
===
Chaotic scenes at stations
Chaotic scenes in stations packed with confused passengers could be seen all along the Chuo Line on Thursday morning after the fire brought services on the line to a standstill.
Commuters waiting for buses formed a long line at the south entrance of Kokubunji Station. A 16-year-old high school student heading for school in central Tokyo said: "I decided to take a bus after waiting for 90 minutes at the station. But it seems unlikely I'll be able to get a bus with such a long line."
Tachikawa Station, which is about five kilometers away from Kokubunji Station, was also crammed with commuters. When a station employee made an announcement at about 9:30 a.m. that train operations would not resume until at least noon, people waiting at the station surged toward the bus stop area, taxi stand and monorail platform. Police patrol cars were mobilized as a precaution.
A 39-year-old company employee from Akishima, Tokyo, seemed to give up on finding any transport, at least for the time being.
"I think I'll take a look round the station's department store and wait for train operations to resume," she said.
A 38-year-old company employee waiting at Hachioji Station was less relaxed about the situation.
"I have to go to Okaya in Nagano Prefecture to make a delivery. There's no excuse for keeping customers waiting," he said.
A long line of people demanding proof of delay slips and alternative tickets formed at a ticket gate at Shinjuku Station. A 22-year-old man who started work in April was heading to Akihabara Station from Hachioji Station. "I took the Keio Line instead, but I'm still two hours late for my training program for new employees," he said.
The services of other railway lines were also affected by the Chuo Line stoppage.
Keio Line's Keio-Hachioji Station, which is about 400 meters away from JR Hachioji Station, was crammed full of commuters bound for central Tokyo. Station employees had to explain to many people how to reach their destinations using the Keio Line. Employees also asked for passengers to understand that the stoppage on the JR line had caused delays on the Keio Line as well.

| Quote: | Train stations installing more security cameras ahead of G-8 summit
Security cameras are seen at a station in Tokyo.
Railway companies across Japan have been installing more security cameras at stations across Japan as anti-terrorist measures ahead of the upcoming G-8 summit in Hokkaido this summer.
Tokyo Metro heralded the introduction of security cameras at its stations after the subway system was hit by deadly sarin gas attacks by the AUM Shinrikyo religious cult in 1995.
Since the fatal incident, the subway system has increased the number of security cameras, which now stands at about 2,800 in total at all of its 161 stations. Tokyo Metro further plans to increase the number of security cameras at its stations to a total of about 5,700 before March 2011.
The subway company has also been replacing old security cameras with new, smaller ones that have better image quality. About 400 new security cameras were additionally installed at stations close to government offices and foreign embassies over the past year as part of measures to step up security ahead of the G-8 summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, in July.
"It is hard to check the baggage of all passengers. We are aware of the risk of being targeted by terrorists and hope to get through the summit with our security cameras and with cooperation from concerned organizations," said a Tokyo Metro representative who is in charge of security.
Meanwhile, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) now has about 7,600 security cameras installed at about 700 stations, mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area and at terminal stations.
Among the figure, about 2,000 cameras were additionally installed after terrorist attacks on the subway system in London left 52 people dead right after the opening of the Gleneagles Summit in July 2005.
In May last year, JR also started the trial installation of a system in which cameras convey images of objects or people that don't move for a certain amount of time to monitors inside the stations.
The company will also introduce new types of carriages that are equipped with security cameras on the Yamagata Shinkansen bullet train line from December this year, as well as on the Narita Express, which connects Narita Airport to stations in Tokyo, from 2009.
