Well who knows Jeff, or did the KPMG report come back and say there is plenty of business in Tas & they should continue to operate. That would stuff them up!

keeps us all guessing any how.

There was talk (once again) from the government recently on the issue of freight by rail on Tasmania and this morning was heard extracted from a press release on the news "Discussions are in progress with at least one other rail operator but it would be inapropriate to disclose their name at this time."

With a statement like that, i think the government are talking things up. I reckon there isn't an operator waiting in the wings.

QR, El Zorro who ever. Tassie rail is not big enough for two operators to make a go of it especially outside the cement and west coast trains, if PN want out then this opens the door for others who may have previously had a look but are not interested.

Potentially I would like to see QR have a go and not because they are such a fantasic bunch but because simply they are the only existing NG operator of any size and flexibility who potentially has the rollingstock to help out Tasrail. Even if not one loco leaves QR, they at least have (had) plenty of spare container wagons.

El Zorro would be interesting to see as well, but they will only be able to work with what they can get of PNT, which for my thoughts would have a fire sale of wagons and locos as what else are they going to do with these?

Regards
Shane

PN will only run cement and ore trains while they hold the contracts.

So far, the submissions that went to the ACCC towards the Govts. application to declare the Tas. system an open access service still stand as the best indicator as to what alternate operators were potentially contenders.

QR quite clearly stated that whilst PN remain, they were not interested, but would reconsider if PN cleared off.

Coote (trading as South Spur) stated they were interested in coming down regardless of PN's presence, however, their main objection was being subjected to PN's control as Track Manager (I dont blame them!).

El Zorro didn't even put in a submission and considering they are yet to really develop an operation on the mainland, they dont really stack up as a contender.

GWA, SCT, IRA, etc. didn't put in a submission either, so obviously none of them are interested.

Freightliner (UK) are new on the scene with proven capability overseas. What they may take on is unknown, but could possibly get established with localised niche work before expanding to take on the big players. There have been some intrigueing noises that pending opportunities in Tas. (Pulp Mll related) could be of interest, as a 'foot in the door', however prospects are rather nebulous on that front and all will have to wait and see.

So, by my reckoning the top three contenders are (1) Coote; (2) QR & (3) Freightliner. I suppose all will be revealed in time.

Cheers,
SZ

Well if El Zorro's chances were reliant on what they could get off PN, they can forget it. As for what would PN do with wagons and locos they couldn't use elsewhere, what do they usually do? Scrap them of course!!

SZ
