I notice that ticking off one of the preset reasons is mandatory for this. Unfortunately, the list of reasons as currently provided is a little narrow. Can we just have a general "because the author is a dirtbag*" reason added?

Please?

*Or if you insist on being sensible, then something like "Other (please provide reason)". I still like "because the author is a dirtbag" though. Cool

Agreed, although I think the person reporting the post should have an option of remaining secret to prevent action not made based on the person reporting.

Metro II.

That would open the reporting system to abuse, then you'd have the trolls reporting everything and giving the Mods hell.

Indeed, I thought it was secret until today.

But I have no problem with it being public. I have a personal policy of not using private messages with people I'm at odds with in the forums (except to answer theirs, but that's usually along the lines of, "Please take it to the forum"). So, I can't complain about reports being public. I can concede that maybe some people might be scared off by it (and I don't think worse of them for that), but there are enough of us who aren't, that one of us will be along shortly to do it.

Makes you wonder why he wants it that way?

The list of reasons is also inadequate - there's plenty of reasons why a post could be reported that are not covered by the present list - most notably "Uncalled-for flaming" and "Deliberate baiting" (Although both could, in broad terms, fit under "postwhoring").

I'm with the Dawg though - the potential list of reasons is too long, and will doubtless end up missing something, so an "other - specify" is the best way around it.

I like the idea of ananymous reporting, but do see how it may be abused. Maybe it could be anonymous UNLESS the reason is "other".

Slightly OT, mods shouldn't be able to respond to reports on their own posts either - I don't think anyone here would suggest that any mod is perfectly calm and unbiased on every occassion, so they do need to be accountable at least to the rest of the moderation team for their comments. Being able to respond to reports on your own post removes that accountability to an extent.

I don't trust my recollection entirely but I thought there was an 'other, please specify' option when the 'report post' thing was first introduced. Then it disappeared. Or my rice bubbles are lying to me again.

Whatever my state of delusion, I'd be in favour of an 'other, please specify' check box.

FS74, it was there, but it isn't anymore.

I wondered why all the fuss when I 'thought' it was there.

I guess it fell from favour then? The mods move in mysterious ways, their wonders to behold.

The list of reasons was cut down because we were getting upwards of 10 reports daily from established members because posts were missing punctuation or wasting our time in some other way.

Yes, but there is clearly an inadequacy in the scope of the reasons. Last night I reported a scu... erm.. chap, and had to just randomly select a reason from the list, because none of them fitted.

In fact, do we even need the list of reasons? Another board I go to just gives you the data entry field when you click "report post". Given that the mods will read it anyway, just have that, and a bollocking for people who misuse it.

Eh wot, old chap?

Maybe a colour scheme ?

in example
Green equates to the user making a mistake like a double post
Yellow equates to what you feel is a possible issue
Red equates to something that you feel is an issue that needs attention ASAP
Blue equates to an issue relating to the site
and maybe even a white for a newbie
Also, mandatory comment field to ensure to person describes, even if briefly, what they feel is an issue since the mods/admin are not mind readers

I would not like the idea of anonymous reporting and actually believe in the concept of making the reporter known to the reportee inclusive comments

May be young'n'dumb, yet unlike some, I've heart!
