I don't think QR is up for sale and there would be any plans to sell it.
As a business, QR like any other business, must keep up with the leaders, otherwise it will be left behind and slowly disappear.
From what I know about QR and from what I've seen of their acquisitions throughout the rest of Australia, I would say that QR is a very "go seeker" type of company that anyone should be proud of.
Unlike other State Government Railways, QR has not buckled and sold off to private enterprise, instead they have taken private railways face on and beaten them and I am sure that Toll will not find it easy taking business away from QR in the mineral traffic.
My railway career with QR started from 1967 until mid 1990 when I travelled to the other side of our island to the iron ore business and even during those times, I was very proud to be part of QR seeing the changes from steam to diesel to electric traction and seeing the workmanship that came out of the Ipswich Workshops.
When I was leaving QR, they were getting very involved in outside consultancy work to other railways nationally and internationally and this continues to this present day.
Although I cannot see the sale of QR happening in the near future and if it did occur, I would be very disappointed with the current shareholders of the organisation in doing so. The other states of Australia could take a leaf out of the Queensland Government in how to manage and retain their state rail systems in entirety.

QR is currently being restructured in such a way that should the decision be taken to privatise certain business units within QR, then it could be done so fairly easily.
QR has repeatedly said that it is not up for sale, but for some time has said it would would consider a strategic partnerhsip or partial sale to a third party.
I don't exactly see many key logistics players falling over themselves to take up these latter options.

QR is not currently for sale and there has been no rhetoric from current owners - the Government of Queensland - indicating a sale is on the agenda any time soon.
Personally - in the next 5 years, parts of QR probably will be sold off. Passenger will probably remain well within government hands.

You'll never stop the pollies tripping over themselves in the rush for some fast cash to spend.
Think of all that pork barrelling they could do for the next election with those billions.
Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.
