Really? Any evidence of such a thing, when did that change. The buttons you are talking about are on the inside, what about on outside.

I think he is referring to the box with a blank glass panel that sits on the centre pole in the stairwell. Apparently a note behind the glass used to say 'exit this door' or something...

The last line of the remaining notice states "press button if doors reclose".

Note that this is only on the Z1/2 class. Note that passengers used to only enter through the front and exit through the centre door. So it made sense that such door could only be opened from the inside and the driver operating the front door.

Yes, I remember those buttons.

The Z3 class also had them on the Middle, and rear doors also.

People would enter the trams via the front, a seated conductor would be seated just in from the front door, where people would pay as they enter the tram.

This idea went, while the conductors where taken away from trams.

The idea went down the gurgler when passengers realised they could hop in the back door of a busy tram and avoid the connie altogether.

Since it was a fair bet that someone would be getting off you simply waited by the back doors until passengers were off and stepped in before the driver closed them.

The "Entry" and "Exit" signs outsde the doors were still visible on some trams until repaint into Guyot Grey livery.

Help Give Melbourne's Five French Trams a Local Twist
Wednesday 30th of April 2008 - Victorian Government - Media Release

Victorians are invited to give Melbourne’s five new French trams a distinctive local flavour with a competition to name the newest members of the Yarra Trams fleet.

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky is calling on the travelling public to come up with five new names for the trams.

“Trams are a classic Melbourne icon and an integral part of our public transport network,” Ms Kosky said.

“With the five newest additions to our fleet coming all the way from Mulhouse in France we thought it fitting that the community be able to have their say in naming them.

“The first tram is due on track next month so now is a great time to give each its own local name.”

“People will need to suggest five names that are easily recognisable and are relevant to Victoria,” she said.

“The winning names will be printed on the side of each tram and the winner will receive a tram inspired prize including a Melbourne Icons Experience Pack which includes free tickets to some of the city’s best tourist attractions.”

Ms Kosky said the trams had been secured under a unique international lease agreement.

“Securing these trams is part of our plan to address unprecedented patronage growth ahead of a long-term tram procurement program,” she said.

“All of the trams have a low-floor design and will be able to carry about 1200 people between them during peak times. That’s the equivalent to taking more than 1000 cars off Melbourne’s roads.

“We will be able to take trams currently being used on Route 96 and allocate them elsewhere to provide more capacity across the tram network.”

The trams will run on Melbourne’s most popular tram route between East Brunswick and St Kilda – Route 96.

All five trams are expected to be in service by September 2008 and will be leased until December 2011.

Entries for the Name the Trams competition close on Wednesday 14 May 2008 and people who wanted to enter the Name the Trams competition should visit yarratrams.com.au and fill out an online entry form.

Parlez vous Français?
Sprechen sie Deutsch?

How about a French translation of the name 'L'Agite Jaune.' Remember, these trams are hired from France. But note two things, that is a machine translation from SDL Free translation, so is there anyone here fluent enough in French to review it? Also, they are hired from Alsace where Germanic languages, most notably Alsatian (Elsässerditsch; French: Alsacien; German: Elsässisch oder Elsässerdeutsch), have been dominant for most of its history and is still spoken there by 25% of the population. So I feel it may be appropriate to give some trams French and some German names.

What about "Rainbow Warrior"?

Do they have to be named? Are any others of your trams named?

If they are going to be used on the route 96, I'd suggest tourist attractions/ iconic landmarks upon that route may be looked upon favourably.

Hmm..

I was toying with the idea of naming a tram "The Met"

Only for myself and us gunzels.. a slight sense of nostalgia - but unfortunately not quite the Melbourne icon...

A put in a couple of ideas.

"Luna Park Loco" (made me chuckle somewhat, given the difference between a tram and a loco)

"Bayside-Brunswick Bandit"
