Just me, or Comengs been behaving oddly these past few weeks.
- Door's closing tones plays briefly on random single occasions
- Half the lights go out going over Glenhuntly railway crossings.

Why this raises my eyebrow, as the two things only occured rarely, once in a blue-moon! Over the past week or two, they've been ongoing. Each Comeng has had the power issue in the rail/tram square. And the doors beeping randomly has happened at least a few times this week, even a couple today.

Something with the alternator IIRC?

I also Noted 1 or 2 of the Alstom comengs that on one side the front door will fling itself open when the doors are released

What do you mean by this? When all the doors are closed and the driver locks them, there are only 4 beeps played, but when one or more doors are open, the alarm will sound until they are closed.

The rail square/lights problem used to happen at Kooyong as well for Comengs, the X'Traps would just lose air-con until the circuit reset. It seems it's a power supply problem at the rail square and not a rolling stock problem.

The overhead frogs for rail-tram square are insulated, so the power supply has to be interrupted. What happens to the lights is the same in a power fluctuation in buildings.

The door chimes I have noticed as well. What The Met probably meant is that they play while the train is moving - at a good 80 km/h, for no reason. Something like 4 beeps, while the train is traveling at full speed. I have noticed that a few times.

The lights going out over Glenhuntly is power related. However, I had experienced a similar problem, but at Parliament :S Train ran the rest of the journey in the dark.

In your case, the driver might have turned the lights off.
Has anyone experimented what happens if the driver presses the door-open button then the close button while the train is in motion?

I think it was a power fault, because it didn't accelerate at a normal speed and we did end up 30 minutes late.

Are drivers even allowed to carry out such experiments, like you pointed out, because of plain curiosity? PR or non-PR?

Drivers do a lot of things that they're not supposed to do.

My only complaint is drivers who release the platform doors on the wrong side, mostly on sections where there is only a couple of island platform stations amongst mostly split platforms, or vv. A simple mistake yes - but they could take some more care.

I have also noticed drivers smoking in the cabs of trains.

How could they do that when the Sydenham line uses the two northernmost tracks which have no platform there? Surely no driver could be so clueless that they would stop where there is no platform!

If your train were to stop there, Metrol would have had to approve it to cross over the tracks to stop there, probably because of a delay or trackwork on the Werribee/Williamstown line, but it would have to be very rare.

Both accounts are generally true representations of what i've witnessed.

In regards to running a train dark into the loop - I was in the first three carriages which were at full lighting, whereas the remaining rear three cars had a minimal amount of lights on (ie, those just around the doors?) - I wondered as the train departed the station, why the lights where off.

In the end, it wasn't exactly driver error - it's the trains playing up somehow!

I have experienced a St. Albans train diverting via Werribee line but not stopping there.

As with all statistics - it has to do with how many samples you take. I was there a few days back and a Sydenham went though on the down and crossed over at the down end. From time to time Metrol routes trains though in weird ways, especially off peak when platforms at closed at North Melbourne to permit construction work.

Doors beeping while the train is in motion is mostly likely caused by someone momentarily forcing the doors open, happens all the time.
