Who knows we might even get the 90s volume before the end of this decade Wink

I did email National Rail museum a while ago asking about a 90s version. They told me that it won't be done. But, with that wink, do you know some inside info?

If it is done, it will be done by an external publisher this time. But it is likely there would be a fair amount of input from some of the original authors and others close to the NRM.

A rough mock-up was done 3 or 4 years ago which since then has been sitting on a shelf. I do believe I saw someone dusting it off just a couple of weeks ago, but don't get too carried way with anticipation.

Ahhh jolly good show chaps. If its in a similar format as the 80s book, it would make a very interesting read.

Hi all

Due to their costs, I generally am limited in the amount of Railway books I have on my shelf. However, yesterday, I couldn't resist a special offer from the authors of one book, and got a copy at the AMRA/nsw open day, signed.

Railway Portraits - Robert and Bruce Wheatley, has some really great photos in there, not just of former NSWGR steam locomotives, but the men who worked them in many long forgotten environments.

I've been quite swept away by this book, and personally recommend it to anyone who's interested in NSWGR history and great historical railway photography.

In saying this, I'd like to open the thread to anyone who have particular favourite railway books in their collection, Australian or otherwise. Another one of mine I got recently, 2nd hand, is "Steam, Steel and Stars" which features the spectacular night steam photography by O Winston Link.

I meant to reply to this earlier, but got side-tracked. Smile

Maikha, I have that O Winston Link book too. Great stuff isn't it? How many recognised that his famous Drive-in photo was parodied on The Simpsons?

If you haven't seen it, look out for "Flashlights on Steam" by Len Whalley. It's basically an Australian version of what Link did and worth trying to find if you can.

My own railway library contains over 500 titles by now (I've not counted it recently). There was a time in the late 80s and early 90s when I seemed to buy a new book or two each week. I've slowed down a lot these days. Friends and family don't bother buying train books for me because I'll probably already have them. Laughing

A selection of stand-outs for me include (but are not limited to) for various reasons...

*Victorian Railways - the way it was.
*A Bulldog Oddyssey.
*South Australian Diesel Pictorial - the 80s.
*Modern Rail Portfolios - No.1 New South Wales.
*The A7 Era.
*Diesel Pictorial.
*A Changing Decade.
*Victorian Steam.

and so on.

Some more international selections include...

*Famous Last Lines 1 & 2 plus Heavy Metal.
*The Golden Years of British Steam Trains.
*Country Railways (UK)
*Railroads in the Woods (US logging)
*Alishan Forestry Railway 1912 - 1999 (2 volumes-Text in Chinese, but the pictures are multi-lingual)
*Car Builder's Cyclopedia 1940 (a 1350-page gem of US freight and pass car builder's info and details - and I'm not even a US modeller).

And I could go on and on....and on.

Then there is the model and miniature section, the railway manuals and rule books etc.

That book sounds quite interesting. I've been on the search for a very special purchase as a gift for my father who is quite taken with History, and especial railway history. I'll look it up online. Can you give me any further direction? If not it's fine, I'm sure I'll find it online.
Thanks for the great review & the post. Cheers.

I've too many books to list here without you all nodding off so heres the pick of the bunch:

Railways of Australia, O.S. Nock
Locomotive Panorama, ES Cox (Deputy CME to Robert Riddles, British Railways)
Locomotive Adventure, H Holcroft (Patented the Gresley-Holcroft valve gear)
Treasury of Classic Steam Trains, N Huxtable
Steam Locomotive Restoration and Preservation, DW Harvey
And the centerpiece,
1905 edition of The Worlds Locomotives, CS Lake (This ones just a wee bit special because one of its former owners was a bloke by the name of CC Singleton)

Cheers
