The Mulhouse Citadis has been out testing again over the past few nights, interestingly the tram is now being referred to as "5123" during radio transmissions.Seems like a combination of 5101 and 2023(it's original number).I'm not sure if any external fleet numbers have been applied yet.

Mulhouse tram was officially launched this morning at a media event in the city. It should be out and running now.

Step into the future
| Quote: | Yarra Trams has today started its driver training program on Melbourne’s latest low floor trams, the C2 Class.
Tram drivers commenced training on the first of the five trams being brought to Melbourne under a unique international lease arrangement with France.
Yarra Trams CEO Dennis Cliche who today launched the driver training program said: “Because the C2 Class trams are very similar to our Citadis (C Class) fleet most drivers are familiar with this type of tram. However, we will be putting all 120 drivers at our Southbank depot through a conversion course which will also include on road driving experience in this new model.”
It is expected that driver training will take approximately two weeks. The final safety accreditation process will follow the driver training program.
“Since the first C2 Class tram was shipped into Melbourne it has undergone significant modifications, testing and accreditation. This has included boosting its air conditioning to make it suitable for Melbourne’s conditions,” Mr Cliche said.
Yarra Trams has added some local design features to the original yellow livery of the tram and the phrase ‘step into the future’ is displayed on both sides. It is one of five trams being leased until December 2011 from the town of Mulhouse in France.
The remaining four trams are due to arrive in Melbourne over the coming months.
Equivalent in length to the longest trams currently operating in Melbourne, the trams can carry about 240 passengers at a time.
Yarra Trams expects the first tram will be in service on Route 96 (East Brunswick – St Kilda Beach) next month, subject to final approval from the independent safety regulator. |

I saw one today, I saw the displays inside the tram displaying stop information, I was told there are audio announcements as well. In Mulhouse they also have both visual displays and audio announcements, but the latter includes specially composed musical links. I wonder if we could do the same here in Melbourne but since our stops are numbered, give the number as well as the location (as in Adelaide), but also, for request stops, telling passengers when to request for stopping at these stops.

I understand no external fleet numbers have been applied yet,on the inside it does have the number 5101 above the cab entry doors near the ceiling.
The tram is still being referred to as 5123 by driving staff and FOC,I'm led to believe the 5101 numerals will be replaced shortly and it will officially be known as 5123.

From the Herald Sun, Tuesday 27th May 2008.
| Quote: | Yellow trams on way for Melbourne
Mary Bolling

THE future is bright for Melbourne trams - bright yellow. And the French owners of the five new trams want them to stay that way.
The C2 class trams, which can carry 240 passengers, have been rented in a three-year, $10 million deal to help meet booming passenger numbers.
And they're in experienced hands. Yarra Trams senior trainer Geoff Scott spent 30 years as an airline pilot before switching to trams 10 years ago. Mr Scott, who will help train 120 Southbank depot drivers on the C2s, said the new trams met high standards.
"They're certainly beautiful to drive," he said.
The trams have been fitted with a Metcard system and an air-conditioning upgrade since being shipped to Melbourne.
But French owners Alstom insist that Yarra Trams keep the bright yellow paint job for the duration of the lease.
Four more are due to arrive in the next two months, and will service Melbourne's busiest line -- route 96, from East Brunswick to St Kilda Beach.
About 35,000 passengers use No. 96 trams each day.
The C2 trams feature the same easy access low floor as the existing Citadis fleet and at 32.5m long, they are the longest in Melbourne by four metres.
Yarra Trams chief executive officer Dennis Cliche yesterday swung out of the new tram door to tell waiting passengers they couldn't board the C2's trial run.
"Just a few more weeks," he told them.
Driver training starts immediately, but passengers will have to wait about a month to get on board.
Once they do, the trip will include automated announcements as the tram approaches each stop. The three-year, stop-gap rental deal will give Yarra Trams and the State Government time to order a new fleet. |

I thought it has been claimed elsewhere that they were equal in length to D2 class.

Why is it, they are required to stay yellow?
Does Alstom have a concern about them being painted in such a low visibility color, which may result in them not lasting the duration of the lease.

So now Citadis trams get automated announcements.
Will they get the M-Robot's voice as used on the Combinos or will the Alstom robot's voice be heard on trams?

The paint job is part of the warranty. The paint put on at the factory is not your standard household indoor paint, it's a special one designed to last five or more years and still look good.

***** THEY ARE NOW OPERATING ****
Just been announced on 3aw radio news, the first of these trams are now in service.
Given the name 'bumble bee #1', due to their distinctive yellow livery.
The Launch also includes a 3aw reporter who was on the tram just as it was to begin its maiden journey.
