On the Flinders Street side of platform 14 - behind the wall that is there now.

In the 1960s, the 5:00 p.m. Lilydale train, timed as an E train (carriages hauled by a pair of M cars) ran from 1 East; it was the fastest to Ringwood (express Richmond-Camberwell (I think)-Box Hill-Ringwood) then loco-hauled timings for all stops to Lilydale.

See above. The 5 p.m. wasn't the only one. The M or M + AM pair then ran the evening local Croydon-Lilydale shuttles, and returned to the city with the 8.35 a.m. (or thereabouts) up train which hauled through carriages from Healesville.. Many readers may not know that outer suburban offpeak or evening services were often shuttle services connecting end-on with "bigger" trains to/from the city.

In the 1960s the 11.25 p.m. Geelong ran from 1 Centre; it was usually loco-hauled, but occasionally I saw a DERM + BCPL (or maybe a BC?); earlier trains during the evening were usually DERMs, as far as I saw them.
If I have some details wrong, in defence I can only plead errors of recollection over 45 years! I no longer have notebooks from that time.
