I'm pretty sure that what I saw was a 620 class railcar that has been lined up with a Tulloch. Next time I go on the Western Line I'll try taking a picture and post it here.

Which locations are 620 railcars kept then? Is any of them near the Redfern area?

I'm off-topic, but I thought that I should stick up for Bungendore (and no, I'm not from there).....

Yes, with the MTR out of action ("closed to passenger traffic while repairs are made") it'd be fair to say that Bungendore is it, "for the foreseeable future". But there's far more at Bungendore than just a general store. Maybe you were thinking of Michelago? I took a drive down there a few weeks ago to look at the station, and there's not much else there apart from a general store and a service station. Royalla, where the MTR picnic trains used to run to sometimes, has even less.

Apologies for the continuing off topic, but I'm forced to agree.

Went on a rail motor trip last time I was in Canberra to Bungendore and back. It's a nice trip to and from Bungendore, the right length of time through interesting scenery. The station itself is a great, historic station, and the town is nice to walk around in the short time you are there.

As a destination, it may not be somewhere you want to go, but the trip there is the right length of time for a short tour, and it's a convenient place to run around (if required).

After a quick look on whereis.com it would appear I was thinking of Tarago. Never been to or even through Bungendore, my apologies to any Bungendorians that were offended.

I am SO moving to Victoria Street!!

621/721 & 623/723 are being retained by Railcorp and if the info supplied to me last night is correct then 621/721 will be going to the NSW RTM & 623/723 will be going to the RMS.
the other remaining City Rail sets 625/725, 626/726, 728, 629/729 & 631/731 are up for tender, the closing date of the tender is 09/07/08.

Thanks 4705-44201NB - hopefully your info is correct. Damn it, I've already ordered an unnumbered set from Eureka Models for my model railway. Ah well, looks like I need to find decals for 621/721. But then again, 621/721 isn't available without sound, so I need to find my own way anyway. Smile

IF it's the other way around, and the class leader is going to RMS instead of RTM, tell me soon please. Laughing There's still a model for 623/723 available - that'll save me renumbering my model myself. Very Happy

Okay does anyone know anything about this set at the Lithgow State Mine?

Quote:
Former NSW SRA 620/720 Class Rail Cars at the Lake Pillans platform. These cars will soon operate the rail service throughout the Park.

Not part of the recently retired sets it seems.

Another pic.

Probably the LSM deserves its own thread but for the moment we'll stick with this one. Interesting they plan to "soon operate the rail service throughout the Park" with this set. They've got a bit of track back to Lithgow station - not a long ride but it's something.
Here's the website:
http://www.statemine.org.au/portal.htm

The 'vision' statement has an interesting line at the end:
Quote:

The Heritage Park concept links a number of heritage sites through the rehabilitation of former industrial railway lines. The sites included in the overall heritage park concept are:

* Lithgow State Mine (City of Greater Lithgow Mining Museum)
* Lithgow Blast Furnace
* Lake Pillans
* Eskbank House (Lithgow & District Historical Society)
* Eskbank goods yard
* Eskbank Station
* Eskbank Locomotive Depot site

This is the second largest cultural heritage project in New South Wales. Current developments to link to the Zig Zag Railway will create the largest cultural heritage precinct in the state.

A link to Zig Zag? That's worthy of another thread! Tell us more, those in the know!!

... and loving it!

The set in the above photos is 661/761 purchased along with 668/768 in the 1995 rollingstock auction, unfornatully 761 was damaged beyond repair in the State mine fire of approx 2002/03 and has since been scrapped.
This was of significant loss as 661/761 was originally 601/701 the first 2car diesel set of this great design.
The other sets that were disposed of in 1995 as well as before & after were preserved as such
602/702, 604/704, 606/707 TRMS
702 damaged beyond repair after purchase but before transshipment to Paterson and since scrapped, 604/704 sold to the local Patterson Pub and used as accomodation. 602, 606 & 707 retained by TRMS

670/770, 636/736 NSWRTM stored at Valley Heights
636/736 now to be sold or placed in trust with another orginisation, 670/770 although in poor condition is of signifiance as it was originally 610/710 and along with 668/768 listed above are the only 2 sets of 600-660/700-760 actual sets preserved as such left out of the original 10.

622, 627/627, 632/732, 635/765 NER
Displayed at Armidale, Tenterfield and somewhere else up there

628 accident damaged sold to a member of LVR and is in a paddock somewhere

633/733, 634/724 sold to DSR&M
633/733 were transferred to Dorrigo, 634/724 were stripped to bare shells and scrapped at Mascot Simsmetal.

638/738 accident damaged LVR Cowra

Thanks for that information 4705-44201NB. It sounds unfortunate to hear so many railcars in such a sorry state, but at least we have a few sets that can be used for preservation, and are in trafficable state. (except for one set I think - was it 626/726?)

All 6 sets that were in service with City Rail in the last 12 months of operation 621/721, 623/723, 625/725, 626/726, 629/729 & 631/731 would not require to much work to return any to service.
21 & 23 are still operational and are the units generally used to shunt any of the other sets about the yards at Broadmeadow.
In addition to these sets 635/765 & 632/732 with NER are or atleast were operational last I heard & 661, 668/768 are or atleast were operational at State Mine.

It is sad to see many of these sets in a sad condition but it is good to see that they have suvived and not scrapped.

There are no 620 sets at Redfern and there haven't been for a 10 years although there are DEB set carriages stored there, and is what was most likely sighted. From memory only there are 3 power cars and 3 trailers currently stored on the site.
