Hi all
Just notice, when using photobucket and post a photo up, it comes up with a red X. When you click on the red X, it opens up into, what i call a new window. Is this a new feature? or is it a fault with photobucket?

I posted an image hosted on Photobucket last night (it is here if anyone is interested). By copying the [ img ] tag link from Photobucket and pasting it into my post I notice that I get a smallish image in the post, which when clicked on opens a window (not a normal browser window though) with the full size image. I suspect this is a cool new feature that Photobucket have introduced .
Edit: I was wrong. I notice that if I now click on the image in my signature the same thing happens instead of it opening my photo album hosted on QRIG...

I introduced this functionality, called "Lightbox", because people can't get their heads around resizing images and posting SMALL photos inside threads. Instead we get people posting 2000px wide images in threads, which makes the rest of us have to scroll horizontally back and forth for every line of text we read.
Also as the server downloads the picture and then resizes it, it cuts down on bandwidth usage for the end user - they don't download the entire pic, only the large pics they want to see.

Sorry Gunzhill, I'm not a fan of your Lightbox. I'd prefer a link to the full size pic which I can open in a new browser tab. But that's just my preference.
What's the default size you resize it to?
And also, clicking on the photo that Graham4405 posted in the QLD Where is it (linked above) doesn't work. Lightbox begins to load but never actually loads.

I agree with Michael and think it is a good idea, however when the [img] tags are wrapped in [url] tags you can't get to the url. Can this be rectified Michael?
Although I appreciate such tweaks, maybe the effort could be better channelled into improving speed and decreasing outages?

I must admit, I'm not a fan either. It's a nice idea, in theory, but I don't want to click to open every image. I'm a fan of thumbnails, or a "click this photo to see a bigger photo" sort of thing, where I can see what I'm going to load.
I'm sure I can get used to it, but I don't care for it.

That's exactly what this does in my experience, you get a good sized preview, which when clicked gives you a full sized image...
For drwaddles: the one I posted works for me...

I should clarify I'm not opposed to automatically resizing big images and providing a link to click on which will take you to the larger image - I would just prefer when you click on the image for the full size to open in another tab rather than in the Lightbox.

I wouldn't mind a "preview" with the larger image opening in a new tab, not at all - that way I could choose what photo to open. All the fotopic photos I've seen have been red "x"s though .

I can certainly change the script to simply open them in a new window, if that's what people prefer. However, unless this broken Fotopic issue is a serious roadblock the resizing is staying
To save me trawling through all the posts in the Photography forum, if someone can point me to an example of broken Fotopic links I'll take a look and see if it works. To my knowledge, Fotopic is the only site it doesn't work on.

The error I mentioned with Graham4405's pic might be because imageshack is blocked at work

Ahhh yessss.
The result any of us sees dispalyed can also be affected by our own circumstances including the blocking of third party sites by businesses.
I suffer the same problem myself but to a greater degree since RP itself it blocked. Oddly enough none of the other similar boards I visit are blocked though. They did a thorough job as I cann't even access the old Railpage Australia™.org sites or hosted pages
Some images are simply a red X when I come to view the posts at home and some of those respond to clicking on the and selecting "Open picture". Most images just open as images of whatever size.
Another related issue might be the fact that some sites or webmasters now code their images in such a way as to prevent hotlinking or downloading. That is done to prevent image / bandwidth theft and I have no issues with why that is done; it does sometimes result in a posted link not working however.

My photobucket images come up with no image (a broken image in Firefox, I assume a red X in IE) - is that you expect? I could handle a thumbnail with a link to a larger image, but I do think you should be able to get to the full sized image as well. Some diagrams really need to be seen full sized to see the full detail.
Here's an example of what happens to my images in photobucket:
At the moment (a) there's no indication that the image actually exists - it looks like a broken link, and (b) there's no way to actually get to the full sized image should anybody actually want to. I don't believe that is very good practice at all...
And this is penalizing those of us who actually do resize images down to a size which fits onto the screen without scrolling.

What gives me the irits is that it breaks the open in a new tab functionality - I just tired duttonbay's image above, and it keeps trying to open it in the same window. I can't even right click to copy the URL, it still ties to load the image. I like having the image load in the background, allowing me to keep reading until the image loads.
