How many return trips would a driver or guard on the Intercity runs do in a day? Considering a Sydney to Newcastle return trip takes close to 6 hours, that would come close to 1 shift, wouldn't it, if you include preparing the train and other duties?

I think you answered your own question for the Newcastle crew. Lithgow is much the same story. Not sure about the other yards that are closer to the CBD though.

Guards and drivers have different awards and conditions.
I'm only referring to Sydney crew here... A driver will only do a Newcastle return. Guards can (and quite often do) take trains to/from Flemo either before/after going to Newcastle. Not both, just one or the other. With the 6 hours you quote, that is a fast train both ways, which doesn't always happen. You also forget any "turn around" time between trains.

Seems like the Intercity crews have an easier/less hectic roster compared to those that do the suburban trips, given the number of return trips they do.

Intercity drivers have no upper limit on the number of kilometres they can be rostered to drive in a shift, suburban drivers have a 217km limit. Likewise, Intercity drivers can have longer shifts (10 or 11 hours?) while suburban drivers have an 8'33" limit. Both get mileage payments after 209km, it's just that Intercity are a lot more likely to benefit from it. The two groups are subject to different conditions in many ways. Intercity are pretty much on the old 'locomotive engineman's award' while suburban are on 'the ETR agreement'. This has been the case for a long, long time.
They have different conditions because they supposedly do different kinds of work. While that was once true, the depots that are now Intercity used to work loco hauled trains, including freight, while ETR did nothing but EMU's, it's all a bit anachronistic now. Both groups are now purely passenger haulers using mostly EMU's (and a few DMU's for Intercity). You can haul passengers, all stations, around the city, or you can skip a few stops to Hornsby and haul them all to Newcastle. I don't see any real difference in skills or prestige.

If I was a train driver or guard, I would much prefer doing Intercity instead of suburban runs. The constant change in scenary makes the day go faster. I certainly would not like to be rostered on the Olympic Park sprint.

If you were a train driver or guard, starting today at least, you would have to begin on suburban duties. After several years of that, you could potentially transfer to Intercity (hi Davidb). Then you'd have some basis of comparison for preferring one over the other. Now, not so much.

I remember speaking to a gaurd at Katoomba oneday, we had a chat and he was telling me he had worked a train from Campbelltown to Sydney, then worked that train from Sydney to Katoomba and would have to work another train or two around Sydney before heading back to Campbelltown.

Not sure about that. Maybe worked to Campbelltown and back to Central, then to Katoomba and back. I know of a few jobs where they do a trip to Katoomba and then a Suburban trip or 2.
Neety might say more, as she would do that sort of thing.
And then??????

This is the bit where I mention IC guards can do "shandy" rosters including one where we do 5 Olly Pks, 4 of them Sprints

That doesn't sound right because you say the guard starts and finishes at Campbelltown, which to me indicates it is a Campbelltown guard, who not be anywhere near Katoomba. Maybe the guard worked a train to Campbelltown before going to Katoomba?? It doesn't sound right to do more suburban work and then finish back at Campbelltown.

Moss Vale Campbelltown Moss Vale Campbelltown Moss Vale; or;
Moss Vale Goulburn (shunt)Moss Vale Campbelltown Moss Vale; or even;
Moss Vale Campbelltown Moss Vale Sydney/Central Moss Vale.
It all depends on where you are

Perhaps the guard lived in Campbelltown, but started his Intercity Guard shift at Central.

Oh, what a nightmare revisited! Used to be a Central roster when I was there, you signed on at 1427 from memory, took an 8 car Tangara to Lidcombe, and then all you did was 'wally world' yo-yo's all night....oh the boredom! (big yawn) Was literally a ghost train after about 6pm most nights, and you just hoped for a guard that was good for conversation after that! Driving it in 'auto' (no EP brakes) was something to do to make an otherwise boring trip somewhat interesting.
It's creepy crawly season, so stop those creepys from crawling, particularly if its a TERMITE!
