Made front page news today in the Bendigo addy

Bendigo Advertiser wrote:
RAILWAY line valued at $26,000 has been stolen from Elmore in the past two weeks, as contractors work to fix the line between the town and Bendigo.
Police said thieves would have needed a semitrailer and forklifts to steal their heavy haul.

About 140 metres of railway line valued at $6000 was stolen from McCormick's Road in Elmore last Wednesday.

Another 391 metres of line valued at $20,000 disappeared from the Elmore rail yard this month.

V/Line maintenance supervisor Terry Henderson said the railway lines had been stolen after being placed beside the tracks in preparation for the following day's work.

"We have got a security guard to watch our machines at night, but we have rail laid out over 15 kilometres," he said.

"We can't lock everything up."

Mr Henderson said he believed thieves may be using the steel for personal use.

"Because the railway line is so strong, it's good for fence posts and for building sheds," he said.

Mr Henderson said other metal scraps had been stolen from maintenance sites because of its high value.

Goornong police charged a man at the weekend in relation to last Wednesday's theft.

Senior Constable Roger Whitman said another two men had also been charged with stealing metal scraps.

And 391 metres of railway line is still missing.

Sen-Constable Whitman said the thieves would have needed to use a semitrailer and a forklift to steal the missing railway line because of its weight, which he estimated at about 18 tonnes.

Mr Henderson said he hoped the recent charges would deter other people from stealing the railway lines.

"Our biggest problem is that it affects our production and our work," he said.

"It's stealing and we want a stop to it."

Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to phone Goornong police on 5432 2207 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

V/Line worksites gang tracked
June 11, 2008 12:00am

THIEVES raiding V/Line worksites have made off with more than $28,000 worth of steel rail lines - but cops were able to follow their tracks.

Bendigo police have arrested and charged three men over two separate thefts at V/Line works near Elmore in the past two weeks.

Authorities said the 18-tonne haul of more than 500m of steel rails would have needed a semi-trailer and forklifts to move.

While one stretch of track was recovered by police, 391m of railway line is still missing.

When they say 140m of rail, do they mean 140m of Up Rail plus 140m of Down rail totalling 280m of "single" rail, or do they mean 140m of single rail?

They mean 140 linear metres of rail. Not track. You have to understand that journalists are very simple creatures, who were insufficiently intellectually-endowed to do anything more than a veggie subject at Uni so they get even the simplest things confused. Twisted Evil

From years of study I have derived two observations:

1. The sum of human intelligence is a constant.

2. The population is increasing.

Ah Ha! Methinks I have hooked a live one.

"Railway Line" is a vague term that can be interpreted to mean almost anything from "60kg/m AS flat bottomed rail" to "everything within the boundary fences".

"Railway Iron" is a specific term that even an engineer would be able to understand.

Shot bit's ???

They were closures to fill in the gaps between the rail's after cutting out the joint's and sliding the rail along to meet up with the rail it was origonaly plated to, the farmer's reckon they make excellent fence & strainer post's !

Enough with the grocers' apostrophes!

The previous post does not require a single apostrophe. Not one. None at all. But there are no less than five sprinkled among the plurals.

PLURALS DO NOT HAVE APOSTROPHES!

Grrrr.Evil or Very Mad

Sound's like someone has taken a little humor too seriously and at the same time has not put in one single word in relation to the subject of this thread !

Anyway i believe not all the missing rail has been found yet, brand new sleepers went missing as well.

You may have been attempting humour but when it comes to my criticism you are a persistent offender. In fact you even added an apostrophe to NathanCastle's words. I don't really mind the occasional typo or misspelling, but please make an effort.

Sounds like someone hasn't read the thread.
