The gallery has been away for a long time. I realise it has required a rebuild or something of that order and we were told a while ago now it was being tested before reopening but have we any more developments since then?
If it is staying offline then I support the suggestion to remove the links and perhaps to offer those who might specifically request it the chance to retrieve their images if required.

The main reason it's offline is that the index page requires 95mb of RAM to generate, compared to 3.45mb for this page. In other words, it'll suck the crotch out of the server if it's turned online.
I've been trying to find a way to create a static, cached copy of the index page - but not had any luck thus far.

OK, only just found this thread... After finding the locked off gallery!
Thanks for finally telling us why the gallery has been down, and why your not finding anyway to get it back up.
BTW: I can really see how 95mb of RAM could be a problem!

I know the old layout with thumbnails was good to look at, but is there any reason why the index pages could not just be text links?
Sort them alphabetical or whatever. Make it like the Members List so that you can search for each members gallery, either by name, by most recent updates or whatever. No need for Thumbs as they don't really show much anyway.
And with text links, you could have more on the one page. Instead of 8 index pages IIRC.
And then??????

The problem isn't with the images - the root of the problem is that for each album in the gallery, the data for that album is stored in a text file in the root of the album. At last count there was well over eight thousand albums in the gallery, so for each generation of the gallery index it has to recurse through the album folders, read the data files for each album and collate it all together. Hence the 95mb.
Shyeah, because using a database would've been too easy.

I tell a lie, actually - the albums aren't in a tree on the server, they're all just lumped together in one folder with no structure to them.
I have managed to get the memory required down from 95mb to 18mb per generation for the index. Still pretty high, but I'll see how that works for now

95 to 18 a big saving, but as you say, still too big.
And then??????

That's it, that's a tidy saving, but still, if you move the decimal point left one spot, we'd be right, considering the RP server (has it got a name yet, BTW?) hasn't got 32GB of RAM, unfortunately...
Still, don't take this the wrong way, is it worth the effort, in the end, with most people now using fotopic, flickr etc?
Just a thought, not bagging the effort or anything silly like that!

To be honest I'd prefer it if we simply ditched it altogether and started fresh - but there's a lot of photos locked up in there, and a lot of people want to get to them. I do see your point about off-site hosts though - hell, I use one

Well it'd certainly be easier! Then again, all those thousands of photos... Even though the RP galler is/was/is free, I suppose that's "all" they do, photo galleries. And I'm sure you've worked out I do too!
Still, it's all experience, and a lot of hard work. Good luck with it because I'm glad you're at it, I hate coding with a passion!

Would it be possible to retrieve the photos that people wanted and send them back to them or whatever and then simply close the thing down altogether and you could spend more time drinking or summat.
This would allow those that wanted too, to post their photo's on offsite places as now done! Just a thought, although it will probably be just as much work!
I have to agree about removing the links to those sections of this site that do not work at the moment, if you want to later on then you can still revive them, if you really want to and it will save all the newbies asking the same inane question "Why does the Image Gallery not work". Just a thought MGH™!

One option would be to write a script to parse all the data folders and output static HTML pages of everything. You can then upload the files to the server (space isn't an issue with running your own server) and then people can still get the images. If they want to add new ones they can just go to another site.

I looked at something similar to that - writing a new class to read the data files properly and just dump them to HTML, without any of the polls/stats/etc rubbish that G1 bloats the pages with.
I've found out that one reason the index page is so bloated is that for each album, it loads the entire album data (including associated image data like count, paths, etc) to memory, and then it tries to determine if it's a top-level album. If it is, it loads that data into memory again, but it still keeps the original copy. In other words, each album is loaded into RAM once and the top-level albums are loaded into RAM once again.
