The first one to report on this was "The Local ScRag" read: The Warrnabubble Standard in Yesterdays paper on Page 3... The pre-intro. headline was located in the header of the front page...
Today saw a lot of talk in the brekky radio show programmes here locally...

While I understand that accidents can happen when a chain of trivial little things are forgotten, trains don't roam the tracks like free range hens! All train movements are controlled, aren't they? What is a Hi-Rail? Is that a track maintenance road vehicle with guidewheels? Surely their movements have to be controlled as well as trains, so that they don't run into each other?
I just don't see how there is any possibility of an accident when the track is officially closed, and physically blocked, therefore no vehicles could be on it.

So by protecting every level crossing due to media hysteria results in media hysteria about protecting level crossings. Nothing like tabloid politicking.

Why dont they do the honest thing and close the line. Lets face it - there's never going to be another train out there - so lets stop pretending, and presto - no need for a flagman.

So what happens if the drainage people accidentally erode the roadbed and quickly patch it up so V/Line don't notice? They try to run a train over the line and it derails, potentially killing someone. To avoid that possibility they have one of their representatives there to make sure the work is up to scratch.
And $1300 a week wouldn't all go straight into his pocket. A lot of it would be meal allowance etc for being out in the sticks.

Think you're confusing things here Mjja. He's a flagman, not a ganger or a track engineer. He stands away from the actual worksite and is not able or qualified to make that call. I guess like any out of commission line, it would be thoroughly inspected prior to any train running.
Wouldn't surprise me if Wannon water alerted the media. They're probably pissed off at having to pay a flagman.
