It is something I have never seen before, I assume there was some kind of failure and the train needed to be assisted in the rear.

Very possibly wongm's assumption is correct, as locotrol (or mid train slaves) are not used outside the Pilbara.

Queensland coal trains use Locotrol with mid-train helpers.

Some of the P classes in Western Australia are also capable of locotrol working but haven't done it for years. They used to do it with an engine at each end so they didn't have to run around their train.

Was there any trackwork going on?
In NSW they sometimes join two services together and run as one past trackwork sections.
Cheers

Nothing that suits your description was sighted through Gheringhap.
Sure it wasn't perhaps a crewcar/carriage sighted halfway down the train?
Didn't the NSWRTM run a train to that part of the world around the time given in the original post?
As already stated the only other option would be that there has been a loco failure of some sort along the way. Don't know why they would have a loco situated in the middle of a train though, regardless of its condidtion?!?

Before I replied above, I did check two other sites, one of which was Gheringhap.

The bloke that told me about it lives on the railway line.
Its just a odd thing to see, but i think it would be a loco failure.

In the Hunter Valley, Silverton used to run a train with mid-train power out of Pelton. I think they used 48's with a second crew and no locotrol.
The other thing is ARTC allowing 1800m freighters after all the upgrading is complete between Melbourne and Sydney if and only if they have mid-train power.....maybe this thing was a trial for 1800m between Melbourne and Adelaide?? But then again, maybe not....

I can't say I've heard of any trials of that sort being conducted, but then again, I'm not in intermodal...
99.99% chance what you saw was two trains amalgamated after the failure of a loco on the first one. It happens somewhat regularly up Cowan bank.
The first train will grind to a halt and control will call up the second train to see if it is light enough that the loco's on the second train can handle both its' load and a portion of the stalled train. If it can, then it is brought into the section on a SPA, SW10 or whatever alternate Safeworking authority and coupled to the back of the train in front. When the driver of the train ahead is ready to go, he'll tell the second bloke via radio to start powering, and then he'll do the same, and together they'll try to lift the load and get it to the first place where the first train can be stabled, or can manage on its' own again.

IIRC, an SW10 is a form used to authorise the passing of a signal at stop under Queensland Safeworking.
