ZC 32 update

Wouldn't surprise me that its finally cut up. When i last saw it, it was even more stripped than the photos here.

ZC32 is still as is, still a heap of smeg.

Although, I did find a use for it a month back when we needed some steel for a patch on 866's bodywork. I cut a patch out of one of the doors on ZC32 Twisted Evil

Look at it this way, at least a part of it will live on Razz

Good basis for a 'new' locomotive. Use the chassis, fit modern engine, alternator, traction motors, control equipment. Ruston 6RK270T rated at 2500hp would be my pick!! hehe Would sound just like an X or a Y.

Oh no, she's beyond restoration. The idea is to lift the engine and generator out of the loco, clean them up and put them on display. M4 is due to be lifted off it's wheels, so when we get the cranes in to do that, we'll lift the engine out at the same time. Then the rest will be scrapped.

I still think it should have been done up for a static display.

That Rail Equipment Broker joker was trying to sell it and wanted over 50 thousand for it. If it was a bit cheaper someone may have brought it.
I know a guy who has a bit of money was looking at perchasing it and shipping it to New Zealand but the Eqipment Broker was not onto it to let it go abit cheaper.

This is an old NZ Railways 6SRKT English Electric Dg class loco
It is stuffed big time and may be alot worse the ZC 32
It just takes time ; money and avalible parts.

I do hope some one ; one day in Tasmania gets hold of one of the stored ZC locos even if it has no bogies. For that reason I hope they keep the bogies off ZC 32. Yanky GE traction motors will go ok in a ZC.

A ZC repainted in AN green at a museum in Tasmania will look smeg hot !

Mike, that DG isn't as bad as ZC32, on the photo side. What you have to remember, getting parts for ZC32, it would be just cheaper to try and get a running ZC loco. Also, getting parts off PN, ha, they wouldn't sell them.

ZC32 was gutted before it was sent to DRR.

Also, you have to weigh up the cost of restoring ZC32 to say CCS23 steamer. I have the feeling, it would be cheaper to restore CCS23 than it would be with ZC32

Bloody kiwi zc lovers! very sad... haha

Problem with DRR is they are not interested in preserving diesels that are air brake. They will scrap it, then when the new TGR scrap the remaining ZC's DRR will wish they had kept ZC32 for a static display (would never run again, way to much stuff removed) They should put it down with Y8 out of the way.

Typical narrow minded thinking of the DRR committee.

I'll take it for a carton, if I can find somewhere to store it! What do DRR members drink? Does the DVR have any space available for storage? I've already asked a friend about storage space but no go! No balls, I say. Anyone else want to come on board? Transport cost might be a bit up there, but could be worked out. How much would the bare chassis weigh? 50 tonnes or so?

Well James I think the DRR should give it to you.

It is worth it even to restore it as a static display. As me old mate Austrain has said ; One day when all the ZC's are gone the DRR will regret scrapping ZC 32.

One also has to take into account that if a loco is restored like ZC 32 that is just a hulk then original parts do not have to be used. Over the years here in New Zealand a few diesel shunt locos have been restored from old hulks. I know of a couple of Drewry shunt locos like your old V class restored from nothing and include different types of motors that they never had is railway service.

Example of ZC 32 not having traction motors. American GE type traction motors can be used along with GE control gear all perchased second hand from the market in the USA or NZ. The 12CSVT motor can be rebuilt from avalible parts sourced from the U.K
As I said in my message ; Anything is posible but it just takes alot of money and time.

As for DG 2376 ; It only has one bogie and no control gear what to ever.
Every other removable pice of equipment has been removed.
This loco was removed from service in May of 1983 and stripped by museums for parts for there DG's. It has sat in the open since 1983 and is just a rust bucket. The roof covers were removed well over 20 years ago and the 6SRKT engine also had cylinder heads removed years ago so you could work out the engine would now be a solid block of rust.
But the owner has time and money and as you can see by the latest pics on his website ; It is amazing what a coat of paint will do.
It is very posible that this loco will not have English Electric traction motors or control gear and may also have a 26L brake head instead of the A7EL that this class used.

A fresh coat of AN green paint with some windows fitted would make all the differance to ZC 32.

In the very least ; If ZC 32 is scrapped Keep the bogies incase one of the ZC 's with no bogies can be perchased off PN
