Gidday,
Could somebody tell me the name of the group in Victoria that is lobbying for the Freight bypass for Double stacking of container Freight. This bypass is supposed to be from outside Melbourne to Broken Hill so that container freight can go to Perth, Darwin and Sydney from double stacked with no impediments.
The Mitcham Council in South Australia has also been lobbying for a bypass from Murray Bridge to Mallala.
Any info would be much appreciated.

No, not the inland proposal.
There is a group in Victoria who want the Mildura line extended to Broken Hill so they can double stack freight from Melbourne to Perth ,Darwin and Sydney.

Could someone explain what the current problem with double stacked freight is?
Does someone have a list of bridges etc that prevent double stacked freight travelling through victoria?

From 'Fremantle Junction' (Tottenham) westward, I can think of possible obstructions...
- Geelong Road, Brooklyn
- Melbourne Road, Newport
- Various overhead stanchions at Champion Road
- Princes Freeway, Laverton
- Forsyth Road (should be okay)
- Princes Freeway, Corio (the old bridge, the 2 new ones are fine
- Separation Street, North Geelong
- Geelong Bypass is okay
- Hill Street, Batesford (possibly)
- Midland Highway, Gheringhap
- Various wooden overbridges between Gheringhap and Inverleigh (at least 2)
I haven't checked out the line past there, so someone else would need to jump in.

Thanks for the lists. Silly me didn't consider SA. I didn't realise how many tunnels there are in SA.
I would have thought the problem of low bridges etc exists in Sydney as well?
Upgrading all standard guage tracks in Australia to allow double stacked freight isn't going to happen....

And don't forget, in NSW, Overhead Wiring You need a clearance of 6.6M (I think) to clear a double stacked well wagon. I think the OHW is about 4.4m from rail head. All machinery has to be capped to work at a maximum of 3.4m whilst working in the rail corridor. The RISI course clarifys that "Thou shalt not be within 1m of the Overhead Wire" (not the official wording by any means but is a good to guide to go with. Consult [url="http://www.railsafe.org.au"]Railsafe.org.au[/url] to clarify and get the official word.

It appears I forgot the Long Gully Tunnel, and a few other things.

The maximum height for any double stacked train is 6300mm (6.3m) according to the ARTC Network Interface Co-ordination Plan - TA02 along the Adelaide - Parkeston Corridor (and also from Tarcoola - Darwin according to an old ARG guide).
Adelaide to Melbourne Trains have a height maximum height of 4250mm (4.25m).
Melbourne to Albury Trains have a height maximum height of 4150mm (4.15m).
