I noticed that the are extending platforms 1 & 2 at Southern Cross, does anyone know if there are any particular trains that this is being done for, or is it just a general platform extension.

Don't quote me on it but I believe it is for the Reintroduction of the Motorail services...

I think someone posted here a little while ago that it is merely to complete the requirement that the amount of platform facing at Southern Cross station must equal that of the former Spencer Street. So it was always planned to be done, but hadn't been until now for reasons beyond my ken.

I heard the same thing. I also heard that access would be via the road that leads into and out of the coach terminal out Southern Cross, behind DFO and near plat 1, behind where the portables of no 1 box and other other staff portables are located.

The original spec for the new station requires that the total country platform length of the old station (platforms 1 to which IIRC was 2700m has to be met within the new completed station .
In building the new station the following plats lost length - 1 was halved, and 2 - 7 all lost varying lengths at the Southern end so that they all lined up straight with the concourse. In the process many loco release roads and intermediate crossovers in 2a, 2b, 4a, and 6a roads were relocated also .
To make up for the lost platform length the following additions have been made : 8 South (New platform on alignment of former Parcels Coach Dock), an extension of platform 8 proper at the Northern end. Finally now the sg trackwork is complete at mouth of plats 1 & 2 the final extension of platform 2 in a northward direction by 70m or so is in construction . The existing length of platform 2 is dual gauge, but the extension is on sg only . The platform extension goes as far as the departure signal on the curve. (No extension of platform 1 it is as long as it can be .)
This will give three (3) sg platform faces being 1, 2a (Centre), 2b (North).
Plat 1 is dead end no run arounds . Plat 2 for full length or as two separate platforms can be operated independently with full dual gauge loco run around available. Also trains can arrive/depart on either gauge into 2 a (Centre) platform via 2a road and the dual gauge centre platform crossover , (whilst 2b (North) is occupied by another train on either gauge.)
In future if required dual gauge access could be provided into platform 3a (Centre) by access from 2a to 2b road into 3 South .
The potential Motorail Dock if there ever is a user for it is the sg spur coming off the access track to platform 1 on the Spencer St side just in front of the old No. 1 Box. Currently no point motor or signals and spiked out .
