Build a O scale Flying Scotsman

Hi all

I must admit, this magazine series did get my attention and interest at first, mainly as a means of getting into building metal model locomotives and O Scale, and be able to spread my cost out over a long while and have a 101 accompanying the parts on how to build it.

However, upon looking at the fine print, looks as though I'll just get the first issue like everyone else, and continue dreaming about being able to build whitemetal locos Sad

I was reading in a British railway magazine about this and the mistakes and errors in the magazine's are beyond belief, "probably all written by a journalist with nothing better to do", it was their words not mine! Cool

I went and bought Issue 1 for $1.50 today to see what the fuss was about, as it comes with a Getting Started DVD.

Of note however, is quite a funny error I picked up, which has also been widely posted on the Pommy forums.

Using XE.com to convert the total cost of the set in the UK of £617.26 pounds (from this forum), that would convert to $1,283.25 in Aussie dollars at the moment, versus the $1850 total cost of buying all of them here Idea

If you were able to get parts sent over from the UK (if the earlier ones were still available!) it would still work out as being more than $500 cheaper than buying it here when you include postage, if you were intent on doing it this way.

My personal experience with these partworks sets from newsagents is that you only get one small part in an issue, some of which probably only cost a few cents to manufacture. $14.95 every week for that? I'll pass Cool

I would also find the possibility of the last ones being discontinued off-putting, if the sales were dropping off a bit. Would be awful to have a near-complete locomotive, except for some crucial parts Evil or Very Mad

As a pommie living in the Uk, am up to part 31 through my
newsagent sales .. Smile

Not that part numbers are in any order, bits of this and that
still waiting for more tender wheels etc... Confused

Book 1 gives you the wrong information on the cab windows
refer to book 10, or visit www.rmweb.co.uk find the post Partwork
and look through about 45 pages of some not and some useful pages

I would like to thank my good mate in queensland for getting me another
part 1 because of the window mistake.... Very Happy

another useful site is ebay, the amount of people selling up is
on the increase..hope this helps..you may find a good pommie
mate useful in providing backup copies if yours go astray..

Not that Im going to get one..Im 1/4" not a 7'er. I read a few forums on this loco and a very short precis is..
It is stricly speaking not the normal DJH A3 corridor kit. It is based on that kit and indeed DJH are supplying many of the parts and indeed the instructions..but it is NOT the same kit !! The French company doing the parts issues are having some parts made in a similar vogue to the DJH.(but by another company ) and they are not always the same. The one you see on the ad is a real standard DJH kit...and is assembled slightly differently. No one has assembled the magazine loco in its entirity as all parts havent been made to date ( according to UK forums). The magazine version uses a molded boiler as opposed to the normal kit I believe.
Point being..I suggest you all read the UK forums as I have before laying out your cash.. Still..for not a lot of money some O scalers can have some roundhouse junk !! Smile

As has been said if it does not sell well it can be discontinued at the drop of a hat, we had this happen numerous times when I was with G&G, if it does not sell they will not perservere with it just because you are making the model and it usually happens towards the end of the series and you could be left with a part completed model, happy modelling!

Oh one thing I should say though is that it would just stop very discreetly, there would be no warning or anything like that, you just cannot get the next issue and your newsagent could be as much in the dark about it as you are! Cool

Have just gone onto xe.com and done the calculations. Total cost adds up to be 1189 GBP (approximately 2,519AU)

I think thats one good thing about it, it's a cheap introduction into soldering brass if you get a few copies of the first issue. Apparently issue two (the footplate) will be 8.95... Looks like it's not brass as well...

The usual arrangement with these type of part publication's is that the first part is real cheap, to sucker you in and from part 2 it sells for the normal price, in this case I think it is $14.95 an issue! Cool

Such a pity it's not an H0 scale one. Oh well, will stick to VR for now.
