i'm traveling on the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide with a four day stop in Alice Springs on the Red seater, (student who cannot afford gold sleeper)
is there anything that you can recommend to have on board to keep conforable, what about food i was thinking of bringing alot of my own but i suspect it would have to be cold food but i could like have my own cereal and snadwiches for lunch and then prehaps buy tea, Luckly i will only be on the train for less than 24 hours at a time with stopping in Alice Springs,
What about at Katherine, is whiste stop worth it or should i just explore by myself in the time I have
anyhelpful tips would be appreciated

Well, by carrying some food along you should save yourself a bit of cash.
Have you a MP3 player so as to pass away some time with a little music ?

The Diner is fully licensed. Snacks and light meals are also available for purchase throughout the day from the licensed Buffet Car.
(These meals are prepared airline style - done by Qantas flight catering)

The Katherine "Whistle Stop" is a 4-4.5 hour stop.
The railway station is some 6kms from the town.
A shuttle bus is available @ $12:00 return fare

As the train will be heading into and leaving Alice Springs in the daylight, you'll get to see a fair bit of the countryside (about 2.5-3 hours worth on the run from Illoquora Loop into Alice Springs from the north and from Alice Springs into South Australia for the run south)
We've had around 15mm of rain in the last couple of days so it'll green up quite nicely in the bottom half of the NT
Have a good look around in Alice Springs, you'll fill in four days quite easily.

One tip that I have learned about long distance rail travel is to stand by the door for a while. Keeps the blood flowing through your legs/feet. The Ghan should be easy to stand up on with out being thrown around with concrete sleepered track (not that I found the Victorian portion of the Overland that difficult to stand up in, being a regular commuter on the Gawler Central line means I can tolerate a fair amount of rough track easily!)

I went on the Ghan in red service seater, I split my trip stopping in Alice Spring for 3 nights, which i suggest is the way to do it otherwise it would be very hard to try ans sleep on the red seater for two night which could be uncomforable for your self but otherwise i recommend the trip, take along a pack of cards and some food sit in the lounge area
if you want a good night sleep get a sleeper

Take a good book. Memory serves they will also show a movie during the day. The trip to Alice springs is about 24hrs.
You are able to make a break of Journey under the fare conditions as the ticket is valid for 6 months.
And for goodness sake hike up and down the carriage a few times (as far as you can go in cattle class).
