'Tora-san' trains roll to commemorate 40th anniversary famous film series

Trains decorated with images of the late actor Kiyoshi Atsumi as the character Tora-san from the famous Japanese film series "Otoko wa Tsurai Yo," started operating in Tokyo's Katsushika-ku on Friday.

The trains are part of a series of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the series' launch. Keisei Electric Railway Co., Katsushika-ku and film company Shochiku Co. cooperated to decorate the trains. The project, promoting tourism in Katsushika-ku, comes as Aug. 4 marks the 13th anniversary of the actor's death.

The trains will operate on all Keisei Lines, but mainly on the Keisei Kanamachi Line in Katsushika-ku, until Sept. 17.

The first film in the series was released in 1969. On Aug. 27, an open-air screening of the first film will be held at Taishakuten temple, in Katsushika-ku. Film director Yoji Yamada and heroine Sachiko Mitsumoto will be present at the screening.

Between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, a flower stand will be set up at the Katsushika Shibamata Tora-san museum in commemoration of the 13th anniversary of Atsumi's death.

Hiroshima suspends 3 'A-bomb trams' over threat

HIROSHIMA -- A threat on an Internet bulletin board has forced a railway company here to suspend the operation of three street cars that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, police said.

Police are investigating the case on suspicion of obstruction of business.

Hiroshima Electric Railway Co. suspended the operation of three "A-bomb trams," or "hibaku densha" in Japanese, on Wednesday, after a threat was posted on an Internet bulletin board at around 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday.

"I will destroy (A-bomb train) 652 at the same time (as the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima) tomorrow," the entry read in Japanese.

Hiroshima Chuo Police Station received a report on the entry and alerted the railway company. There was no abnormality with the trams.

The three A-bomb trams were operating in Hiroshima when the A-bomb was dropped on the city at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945. The railway company arranges the timetable so that two of the three A-bomb trams pass by each other near the A-bomb Dome in Naka-ku at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 6 every year.

8,600 train passengers stranded after key caught on overhead line

KARATSU, Saga -- A key tossed by a woman from a station platform got caught up on an overhead power line, causing the temporary suspension of train services that affected about 8,600 passengers, Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu) said.

The incident occurred at Hamasaki Station on the JR Chikuhi Line in Karatsu at around 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday, company officials said.

A woman in her 20s tossed a key attached to a key holder from a platform to her husband on another platform across the track, but the key got caught up on an overhead power line.

Services on the line were consequently suspended for about 40 minutes from around 7:20 a.m., delaying three trains by up to 47 minutes. The trouble also affected connecting trains, with four train services on the Fukuoka City Subway suspended and four other train services disrupted.

The key was later removed from the line by a JR worker.

According to JR Kyushu, the woman was just about to board a train bound for Karatsu when she threw the key to her husband on the other platform about 10 meters away.

Bereaved kin to get info on JR officials
The Yomiuri Shimbun

KOBE--The Hyogo prefectural police will provide relatives of 106 victims of the April 2005 derailment on the JR Fukuchiyama Line in Amagasaki with details of papers on successive West Japan Railway Co. executives before sending their papers to prosecutors in connection with their alleged negligence in the case, it has been learned.

To take this unprecedented action, the police plan to visit the victims' relatives, while sending letters to 562 people who were injured in the train accident.

According to investigative sources, the police will send papers in September on Ryujiro Takami, a 23-year-old driver of the train who died in the derailment, and nine other individuals, including JR West President Masao Yamazaki, 65.

The information to be given to the relatives of the deceased and those injured in the accident include the names of JR West executives--whose cases will be sent to Kobe District Public Prosecutors Office--as well as details of police suspicions.

Article 47 of the Criminal Procedure Code bans the public disclosure of records related to lawsuits prior to trials. However, the article includes a conditional clause that allows exceptions "when it is necessary from the viewpoint of public interest or when there are other substantive reasons."

The police took the unusual decision to notify those involved in anticipation of a planned new system scheduled to start this autumn, which will allow victims in criminal cases to participate in trials.

The police reportedly deemed the biggest problem to be the fact that JR West did not install an automatic train stop system (ATS) as a safety measure after altering the path of the tracks at the site of the 2005 accident in December 1996.

Police usually submit one of four types of comment on a case when they send papers to prosecutors. When police want to press prosecutors to proceed with a case, they ask for a genju shobun (severe punishment).

For the five JR West executives, Hyogo prefectural police plan to ask for a soto shobun (punishment worth prosecution). This is the second most stringent comment after genju shobun.

The five suspects include Yamazaki, who was head of the company's railway operations headquarters, and a former president of Shikoku Railway Co., or JR Shikoku, who held the same position at JR West as Yamazaki's predecessor.

Apart from the five executives, papers on four other suspects are expected to be sent to the prosecutors. The suspects include a former executive managing director at JR West, who was the head of railway operations headquarters when the company decided to install an ATS system in September 2003.

The prefectural police will send papers on the four officials after consulting with survivors and relatives of the deceased. However, the police will not seek prosecutions over the four, believing the accident could have been prevented if the ATS had been introduced in 1996.

The Kobe District Public Prosecutors Office will decide whether to prosecute the suspects after weighing up all pertinent information.

Japan's JR Central to boost stake in bullet train maker
8 hours ago

TOKYO (AFP) — Central Japan Railway Co. said Friday it aims to take a controlling stake in bullet train maker Nippon Sharyo for 26 billion yen (220 million dollars) amid strong demand for rail travel.

The rail operator, also known as JR Central, will launch a tender offer on Monday to increase its stake in the train manufacturer to 50.1 percent from the current level of 1.8 percent, Nippon Sharyo said in a statement.

The deal, which comes amid strong demand for travel on bullet trains -- known as the Shinkansen in Japan -- will help to increase productivity in the rail car business, according to Nippon Sharyo, which is supporting the bid.

The capital tie-up will "boost our cooperation one step further and strengthen comprehensive technological cooperation," it added.

The bid of 370 yen per share offers a premium of about 40 percent on the target company's closing price on Thursday, JR Central said.

As well as manufacturing bullet trains, including a new luxury series, Nippon Sharyo is also working to develop magnetically levitated trains that JR Central hopes to put into operation by 2025.

The planned maglev line would whisk passengers from Tokyo to central Nagoya at more than 500 kilometres (310 miles) per hour.

The maglev train would enter service at a time when Japan looks for a successor to its famed bullet trains, which were first rolled out to the world's awe for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

JR Central shares ended Friday down 2.0 percent at 1,091,000 yen. Nippon Sharyo shares ended up 2.3 percent at 268 yen.

Concrete falls from Hiroshima JR track
The Yomiuri Shimbun

HIROSHIMA--A large section of concrete was found to have fallen from an elevated track at JR Sanyo Shinkansen's Hiroshima Station in Minami Ward, Hiroshima, on Thursday, West Japan Railway Co. said.

The incident did not affect the shinkansen schedule or cause injuries.

According to JR West, the concrete fell because a steel reinforcing frame of the 5.4-meter-high track had corroded.

The fallen concrete was found by a worker in the area who reported the incident to JR West at about 8:15 a.m.

The 97 kilogram and 1.3-meter-long piece broke into 10 pieces weighing 3 to 18 kilograms when it hit the ground.

No problems were discovered when the track was inspected in February, according to JR West.

Early Shinkansen series making final runs
The Yomiuri Shimbun

OSAKA--The first generation 0 Series Shinkansen bullet trains have been packed with families and railway enthusiasts taking farewell rides prior to the trains being retired in November.

Package tours for riding several Shinkansen trains and Shinkansen-related goods have been sold to commemorate the retirement of the series.

Only three trains of six cars each are currently used for Kodama services running between Shin-Osaka and Hakata stations on the Sanyo-Shinkansen Line.

The 0 Series Shinkansen made their debut as superexpress trains that run at 210 kph, a world record at the time, when the Tokaido Shinkansen Line opened in 1964.

As of 1986, 3,216 train cars had been manufactured in the series, which was popular in part because of the button noses on the front of the lead cars.

The trains traveled between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka stations, taking about three hours. However, the series was gradually replaced with new models and finally retired from the Tokaido Shinkansen Line in 1999.

Two of the train services that are still in operation--departing from Shin-Osaka Station at 6:12 a.m. and 7:59 a.m.--are typically used by business travelers, but increasingly have been booked by families since the summer holidays.

Yu Ueda, a 6-year-old kindergartner from Osaka, traveled with his railway-enthusiast parents on the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Himeji stations. Posing in front of the lead car of the series for a commemorative photograph, Ueda said: "I'd only seen the train in a book, so I wanted to ride it. It's really cool."

Hirokazu Katayama, 45, a company employee from Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, said he was sad that the trains of his generation would no longer run, while a 37-year-old passenger from Mie Prefecture said he had many memories of the train from school excursions, business trips and just riding it alone.

On Aug. 1, 1,000 toy Shinkansen sets were made available for 9,000 yen for a limited time to commemorate the retirement of the series, but they sold out the same day.

Monkey amuses commuters at Shibuya station, gives cops the slip

Police officers are searching for a monkey that popped up at a busy Shibuya railway station in Tokyo on Wednesday morning and fled toward Harajuku.

A security guard spotted the monkey near a ticket gate of the Tokyu Toyoko Line at Shibuya Station at around 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday. A station employee alerted police, who rushed to the scene to try to catch the monkey, but it fled from the station about two hours later.

The monkey, which is about 40 centimeters tall and is believed to be a Japanese monkey (nihonzaru), fled toward the Harajuku district, police said.

There has recently been a spate of monkey sightings in residential areas in Tokyo, including one in Koganei on Aug. 12 and another in Setagaya-ku on Monday, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Officials suspect that the same monkey is involved in all sightings.

According to Tokyu Railway, the monkey was roaming around on the stairs near the ticket gate and near the ticket vending machines before it climbed up and sat on a train departure sign hanging from the ceiling at the station.

There were no reported injuries to passengers or any train disruptions, but the area was crowded with curious bystanders.

"If it is a Japanese monkey, it may have been separated from a pack living in the Okutama region (in the suburbs of Tokyo)," said a representative of Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo.

Rare female Seibu train driver meets wartime forebears
The Yomiuri Shimbun

SAITAMA--Yuka Haneishi, 24, who last month became Seibu Railway Co.'s first female train driver in 64 years, met her 84-year-old predecessors, Tomi Nagoya and Yuriko Machida, on Wednesday.

The two former wartime female drivers of the private railway operator visited Seibu's head office in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, to offer encouragement to Haneishi.

Nagoya and Machida worked as train drivers from 1943 till 1944 for Musashino Railway, which operated the present-day Seibu Ikebukuro Line.

Nagoya, who was shifted from conductor to driver duties when male drivers were conscripted during World War II, said, "[Pantographs on the roof to power the train] could not be raised, so I had to climb up on to the roof of the train to push them up into the correct position."

Machida urged Haneishi, who joined Seibu Railway three years ago, to "Keep doing your best in order not to lose out to men."

Haneishi said, "I was made to understand once again that, like in the past, safe driving is of utmost importance."

Seibu Railway currently employs 599 drivers, including Haneishi who is as the sole female driver.

First generation bullet train finds new home

The front carriage of the 0 Series Shinkansen train is seen in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, on Wednesday.
SUITA, Osaka -- One of the first-generation Shinkansen bullet trains built in the early 1960s will find a new home -- a museum.

The head carriage of a "0" Series Shinkansen train will be displayed at the Railway Museum in Saitama after years of storage at a facility belonging to West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) in Suita.

The symbolic blue and white carriage, which was built before the Tokaido Shinkansen Line opened in 1964, was lifted out of the JR facility on early Thursday morning and was transported toward Kobe Port on a trailer.

The car is the second carriage in the 0 Series Shinkansen train ever built and was used until around 1977.

Three trains in the 0 Series still run on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line today, but they are slated to be retired at the end of November
