Whilst traveling to Sydney this morning by train, I noted the following at Flemington Maintenance Centre (FMC) that may be of interest.

Two XP units coupled together "nose to tail" were facing west within the yard with several trailer cars behind them.

Now the two XP units were coupled together via the emergency coupler, While I have seen loco hauled, failed XP units hauled this way but never by another XP unit?

Sorry could not see the numbers of the XP units, any ideas why this working occurred?

Regards,

Catchpoint

Thanks for your reply fieldshunt.

While I readily suspected that the XP's and trailers have wheel lathe attention at the FMC for some time now.

My observation (and post) was more about the sighting of two XP units coupled nose to tail with the emergency coupler - effectively "double heading" several trailer cars rather than top and tail.

Can appreciate that thats possibly how both XP's were facing at Meeks Road and rather than turning one on the triangle there they were coupled together when sent across to FMC.

All - sorry for not doing a search first on this topic prior to posting, perhaps i should have made my subject heading more specific?

you will see alot more countrylink rolling stock out there more offtern now as the tracks are stuffing the wheels due to ARTC removeing the grease pots.

Now would that be saving money Question

Costs the operators money refiling wheelsets. But the trains may also be causing track damage as a result more expense incurred by ARTC in Rail Grinding and/or rail replacement.

Seems the odd happenings here with the XP copy how some of the "similar" HST power cars in the UK were found in days gone by.

I will have to try and dig out a pic I have of 2 HST pwer cars back to back - then coupled via the emergency coupler to a full rake of MkIII trailers - "double heading" almost thru the Worcestershire countryside up the Lickey.

The of course there were the East Coast drags in the early 90's with an electric class 91 at one end of the set and the HST fully powered at the other....
