According to notes on both Amtrak's and VIA Rail Canada's
web sites, the North America Rail Pass will shortly be
discontinued.
The North America pass will not be sold by either carrier
after 2008 September 30.
A North America pass is valid for 30 days beginning from
first travel date; with the discontinuance, first travel date
must be no later than 2009 September 30. I don't know
whether that means you'd better travel on the pass by that
date or it becomes invalid, or just that it cannot in any
case be used for travel after 2009 October 30. (Probably because the passes are valid for 12 months from date of issue until first use.)
The carriers' own passes--Amtrak's USA Rail Pass, VIA's
Canrailpass--will remain, though I have a feeling that
the rules governing valid use of USA Rail Pass may change
soon.
