Searching for camping areas close to the rails, particularly suitable for backpacker/walk entry. Low cost is okay, free ones are excellent. Anywhere in the rural or regional settings around the state.

Although actually getting there by public transport is half the fun! Smile

Burren Junction Hot Spas camping ground. Has mineral springs, however its 100km west of Narrabri, and not exactly the easiest place in the world to get to without a car, although I do believe Countrylink has a coach service that connects with the Xplorer at Narrabri. Would be good around November-December when the wheat harvest is on.

It's creepy crawly season, so stop those creepys from crawling, particularly if its a TERMITE!

What are you actually looking for - a commercial caravan park near a railway or a place to camp in the scrub that is near a railway but accessible by public transport?

I think there's a campsite just out of Dungog...near the bridge on the northern outskirts of town.

Culcairn had a caravan park / camping ground on the flats below the bridges carrying the Main South and the Olympic Way 20 - 30 years ago. Stayed there one night, great spot! It was just on the south edge of town.

Rathole, what is your intent? do you want to sit outside your tent and watch trains go by, or do you just want to be close to a station, or what?

If you just want to be within walking distance, both Harden and Cootamundra have caravan parks only about 1 block from the line - at Harden you can stand at the entrance to the men's and look down the street to watch the trains go by.

Again this depends on Rathole's intent. Camping is not permitted in the stone sculpure bit, but at the top of the hill there's enough of a clearing in the national park to set up a tent (I used a hammock between 2 trees). Hope you're a sound sleeper though, 'cos you hear the horns all night long.

I am SO moving to Victoria Street!!

Hi All,

I wouldn't laugh at Wondabyne only because I have seen tents up there close to the railway.

Last time I was up Mullet Creek in the boat, RailCorp had No camping and trespassing signs all along the line.

If you fancy a walk you can walk in from woy woy tip down to the old remains of a camp that was once set up there when they were building woy woy tunnel as i did a walk down there with national parks and some times in the summer you can see them parked on the other side of the river.
Or if you hit low tide you can walk up to the very end of the river where there is a small tunnel that runs under the line and cross there.
