So Cruel
By Miranda Forster
26 August 2008

A criminologist has warned the sickening attacks on koalas in Pine Rivers may lead to violence towards people.

A koala sleeps at Jim Akers Park in Kallangur, the site of a recent attack.

August 13, 2008: An attack by a group of youths armed with rocks and sticks leaves one male koala dead and a female and her joey injured. In a separate later attack in Clear Mountain, a koala is mutilated and killed.

May 2008: One cat is killed and two dogs left with sever cuts after a spate of attacks on household pets in the Kallangur neighbourhood.

August 2007: A shitzu-maltese terrier cross is found strangled to death with a piece of rope by its Deception Bay owner.

October 2006: Police report three vicious attacks on pet cats around Narangba in a few weeks. One cat is found with one of its toes chopped off.

August 2006: Three young boys are spotted beating a horse at the Redcliffe Pony Club with sticks. A week later thumb tacks are found in the horses' drinking troughs.

June 2006: A kitten is kicked to death in a Narangba park. The teenage male responsible is later found guilty of one count of animal cruelty.

February 2006: The discovery of a decapitated koala in Bellmere prompts an area veterinarian to speculate someone may have taken the head as a trophy. A few weeks earlier, a decapitated cat and guinea pig had been found nearby.

March 2005: Two horses at Bramble Bay Pony Club are put down after becoming seriously ill after allegedly being poisioned by an unknown person.

This makes me sick ... who the hell would have the heart to attack a poor, defenseless animal so viciously?

State Government spokesman Stuart Copeland said: "The longest sentence for cruelty handed down by Queensland courts is just four months jail."

... that is absolutely pathetic. The penalty for such a crime should be much more severe.

What do you think?

I don't 'think' - this sort of activity goes way beyond my comprehension.

My head spins at why people would do this sort of s**t.
To put it simply, it disgusts me, it revolts me, that there are so-called humans out there who would consciously hurt, torture, or kill, animals.

I believe in getting as good as you give.
Karma has a nice way of coming around unexpectedly. And I hope it bites these mongrels on the backside twice as hard as what they do to these animals.

Is this a re-hash of the story a few months ago on QLD Tabloid news TV?

Don't know, sorry. This is the first time I have read about these attacks.

I have lived in Pine Rivers my whole life and we used to see wildlife around the place all the time. As the area has been developed more and more they've disappeared. Why attack the few who have survived?

As few have said before, Karma is a b*tch.

Really it's just a form of bullying, carried out by the truly weak scumbag, the type that hasn't even got the balls to try and bully a human, even one clearly smaller that him. Were these scum from NSW this image may be appropriate.

It's also not new, occassional reports have come up for as long as I can remember, although the frequency might be on the rise, which wouldn't surprise me as society seems less empathetic now than 20 years ago, and empathy is probably the main reason we don't all do it.

BTW before arguing the last point stop and think. The common argument will be "It's just wrong". And that's true, but WHY is it wrong? Because we have empathy with the animal. "It's illegal" - why? Because "It's just wrong". follow the same path. Very few people refrain from doing something PURELY because it's illegal - the number of people that use illicit drugs, drive above the speed limit or take a pen home from work is proof enough of that.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. People do not attack animals primarily because it is against their core moral values. Unfortunately, the standards of these core values is falling as every day passes.

Crime Rivers / Pine Rivers has always been the subject of attacks, be it against people or in this case animals.

Our legal system needs to be strengthened. Penalties are too weak.

It has been shown in the past, that people who were cruel to animals in their youth are well trained for their later habitual cruelness and violence to people. They have no sense of empathy and no concern for the feelings of others. Don't forget that the man who raped and then cut the throat of Anita Cobby, was doing the same thing to sheep just before. It is a pity that he had weak followers who thought that he was cool.

Yes apparently it's a classic behaviour of serial killers. They start on animals and move on. Watch Dexter and you'll learn more about this personality type.

It certainly upsets a lot of people (including me) and I wonder why it affects us so much as opposed to a lot of other horrible stuff that goes on with humans. Although don't get me wrong there - that gets to me too but it seems to be in our face every day in the news so there must be some desensitisation.
