This is something that I've been seeing ever since they were put into service. SMU/EMUs still running up to Nambour, yet 80% of the time you're bound to score an IMU to Shorncliffe or Ferny Grove.

Now, there isn't too much wrong with sending an SMU up to Nambour as they're a bit more comfortable than the EMUs, but they still don't have toilets, and if I had a dollar for every time I heard "is there a toilet on this train?", I'd be filthy stinking rich.

Don't get me wrong, I have noticed a lot more IMUs (even if they are the older units) up at Nambour, but I've noticed many more being used for short Shorncliffe, Ferny Grove and on occasion even Doomben runs.

Why is this happening? Are there stock shortages at the time or what?

Speaking of which, for the past couple of weeks, I have noticed a couple of ICE power cars sitting at Mayne, and they've only moved once. I have also noticed a 5 car ICE, instead of the three 6 car sets which was excellent. Are they progressively being taken out of service?

All the new trains go to the Gold Coast/Airport trains. That's the "flagship service" apparently. You would think that with only 2 or 3 lines where IMUs are required (Gold Coast/Airport and Nambour) it wouldn't be too hard to make sure they are available.

I guess with maintenance schedules it can be hard to assign specific classes of trains to specific runs. Especially so with Ekka being on over the last few weeks.

ICEs seem to be in maintenance more often than in service. A ICE Power Pair which is regularly sighted at Mayne seems to have been "permanently" stuck there for a while now.

That's what happens when a train designed for a different purpose gets put on runs that they weren't designed for.
