Graham,
it depends upon your interpration of main line. Steam Ranger run BG on the main line between Mt.Barker and VH, PRR run NG on the main line between Quorn and Port Augusta.

I believe in NSW, over dimensional loads are permitted to operate between dusk to dawn as well as between dawn to dusk (essentially 24hrs).
Truckin Life magazine regularly has a couple of pages devoted to shifting over dimensional loads and the majority of them appear to be at night time (black sky, moon, nil sun, headlights on on all vehicles, streetlights on are a sure give away).
The narrative with the pics also describe the movements occurring between dusk to dawn, just in case a picture doesn't say a 1000 words.

I believe this may help in your quest to find 766

The Herald wrote:

Offers may halt Steamfest derailment

HUNTER Valley Steamfest could take on a new look next year with local steam trains, and luxury train travel from Sydney to the region's wineries.

Hunter Valley Railway Workshops and Museum at North Rothbury hopes to have its four-star car vineyard service rolling by the end of the year with the aim of marketing it to complement next year's Hunter Valley Steamfest.

Managing director Michael Muter and operations director Mark Stapleton are the brains behind the operation, which they believe will keep Steamfest local and carry it into the future.

The men contacted The Herald after reading a report that said Steamfest could fold next year because of the exorbitant cost of staging the event and bringing in trains from outside.

Steamfest committee member Peter Garnham said it cost between $100,000 and $120,000 to bring three steam trains to the city.

Mr Muter and Mr Stapleton said they have three 10 class locos accredited for main line use and, with a few more carriages, they could help keep the show on the rails.

But the jewel could be The Hunter Limited, a luxury tourist train hauled by the R class 766, once an exhibit in a Bendigo park.

The loco, restored at Rothbury for $1 million, will carry passengers in up to nine luxury carriages from Sydney to Branxton at weekends.

Hunter Valley Training Company chairman Milton Morris has applauded the move.

Mr Garnham said another heritage train operator from outside the area had also expressed interest in the event.

Ok, by that article, we have ascertained the fact that R 766 is back on its wheels and getting worked on as shown in the picture but to what extent? And what work has been done on it or needs to be done on it to get it back into service? I miss hearing the updates that used to be in the Steamrail forum as to what progress has been done to it. After all, wasn't the major work done in Melbourne before it was taken up to NSW? And what is the time frame to the work being finished on it and it back in service? I know foamers can be a pain in the freckle when it comes to some rail projects, but it would be nice for the "Mexicans" who have had the pleasure of being on a train hauled by this magnificent loco as to how it is and the progress being done on it.

Nice to see that the credit for the work done at Newport has been taken by others.

Completely right, what a slap in the face for the people who worked on it at Newport Rolling Eyes .

I think you will find that most of the work done at Newport was done by the people from Rothbury.
And they didn't return the reamers they borrowed form the Turnery!!!

A "current status of" report would be nice, timely and welcome Smile

Negative comments & quasi-flameblasts from certain people would not be welcome. Those people can no longer say anything that we can't imagine.

Why drag a 4 month old thread back to the top of the list when this very same topic is already active in another thread in the preservation forum?
