To help answer a question in the SAR/CR quiz can anyone confirm if any of the following classes were shipped direct to WA or were they all sent via Melbourne and Adelaide on transfer bogies -

C, H, K, KA, R, RA from English Electric at Rocklea, Qld.

A, AA, AB, J, L from Clyde in Granville, NSW.

Thanks Smile

The Ks and Ls were delivered on broad gauge through SA and Victoria although a few Ls were borrowed briefly on the North East standard gauge line for a few general frieght services. They rode on former S class (steam) bogies as they passed through wide gauge territory. I have a magazine produced by the ARE from 1967 which details these runs. I'll quote what I can from it later on.

Also, the AAs and I think the ABs were built in WA and you also missed the D and DAs which were also built at Granville (being the last diesels Clyde built at the site before moving to Bathurst).

Aparrently there were 6 A's built in WA, the rest were built in NSW. I thought about the D/DA's however as these were built after 1970 they would have travelled on the SG line via Broken Hill. The question in the quiz related to 'foreign' power that travelled over the BG though any extra info on the Midland F/G's and the WAGR D/DA/NB's etc. would be welcome Smile

Please excuse me about the D and DA, I only looked at that quiz question after I made my post here.

No worries 409.

For those who don't wish to visit the quiz, the question referred to what classes of 'foreign' government loco's travelled over the former SAR BG. I think we have them all covered however the movement of the WAGR loco's has been a bit difficult to track down. In saying that I thought it would be interesting for this question to include all the WAGR locos built outside of WA.

I think the C class were shipped to WA.

The R and RA went by rail. The KAs were converted in WA.

Confirmed. Picture of EE WAGR C class being loaded on a ship in Brisbane on P.84 of "Modern Australian and NZ trains" edited by Frank Shennen, Murray Publishing Co, Sydney. Date of this picture book not stated but approx 1965 from clues on the WAGR H class entry on P.109.
