Next step. Moss Vale Junction Signal Box being stripped out.

I recall hearing about this at the Thirlmere Festival of Steam on 2nd March. One member talking to me and others in the Thirlmere Signal Box mentioned they were still awaiting ARTC approval to go in and remove the equipment. Don't know if he was part of Thirlmere or Illawarra or Valley Heights divisions.

Pictures here taken this morning Wednesday 18th June 2008.

Firstly to update the above post re Moss Vale Junction. Reported in the latest Roundhouse that half the frame has been removed for erection at Buxton inside the former Summit Tank signal box which has also been removed.

Now for new news:

SN538

Only about 12 months later than I was told last year Rolling Eyes

If ARTC are only leasing the corridor off the NSWGR do they have the right to remove historical infrastructure such as signal boxes or station buildings??

As things now stand, there is not much left to upgrade on the South.

Some UQ semaphores from about Tahmoor to Yerringbool.

Some UQ semaphores from Fish River to Yass

Some UQ semaphores from Bowning almost to Harden.

More refuging facilities for 1500m trains are needed at places like Moss Vale and Goulburn.

The ARTC plan:

Step 1: Always was close the signal boxes, leaving most yards as they are within reason. (Exeter, Bundy, Wingy and Picton notable exceptions)

Step 2: Go back and remove unwanted infrastructure. (Moss Vale North Dock siding, Bargo crossovers and siding are two cases OTTOMH)

Step 3: Upgrade all facilities and provide improved crossing capabilities.

Why on earth would you want more standing room at Moss Vale and Goulburn ? The idea is to keep the trains moving not shove them in holes .
Moss Vale really needs a short "Y" off the country end of the platform so the tin cans can vacate the down platform and not stand for extended periods on the up platform , they are MAIN lines not stop blocks .

Goulburn really needs a by pass possibly around the outside of the down yard , its a shame that the Hume by pass goes up a bloody great hill because if it had been flatter an adjacent rail by pass would make all the difference to through traffic .

Snotty Rail has to learn that there are other things with flanged wheels that have or should have priority as well .

BTW the march of colour light signalling is soon to reach the Tahmoor Yerrinbool area so get your pics of the 69 signal while you can .

At one point in time years back (Pre ARTC, even pre RIC IIRC) there was a Moss Vale plan whereby similar arrangement to that currently at Goulburn and Yass would have been introduced:
    1. Current Up Platform was to become the through platform for passenger services in both directions;
    2. Current Down Platform was to have STOPBLOCK placed at Goulburn end of platform to become a termination road;
    3. New trailing crossover from Down to Up Sydney side of platforms to originate Up services from new termination road (Down Platform);
    4. South Fork was to link into No 1 road Down Yard and Goods Siding for branch access for through freight;
    5. Down Refuge and Loop was to be continuous welded railed to become new Down Main Line passing terminated services.

Further to my report above on Calwalla Control transfer. I have just located that Robertson will be similarly treated on Thursday 18th September.
SN888
Quote:
Robertson: Train Control Consolidation Project
Transfer of the Control of Signalling Functions for Robertson from the RailCorp Wollongong complex To the Network Control Centre South at Junee
Commencing at 0600 hours on 18 September 2008 and progressing in 12 hour day work shifts between the hours of 0600 and 1800 daily until completion or at 1800 hours on 20 September 2008, the control and indication functions previously situated in Wollongong Complex for Robertson will be transferred to the Network Control Centre South (NCCS) at Junee.
These works form the second stage of the 5 stages that are required to implement the change of control for the Moss Vale to Unanderra line.

Further Robo line updates.

Mount Murray control transfer: 21st to 23rd September SN890

Summit Tank control transfer: 24th to 26th September SN891

That will leave just Dombarton to go across

Further Moss Vale to Unanderra line updates.

Finally Dombarton control transfer: 27th September to 2nd October
SN892
Quote:
These works form the fifth stage of the 5 stages that are required to implement the change of control for the Moss Vale to Unanderra line.
Quote:
Following the transfer of Dombarton to the NCCS and the Dombarton local control panel is switched out, the main South A Network Controller and the Area Controller at Wollongong must confer with each other for the signalled movements of services operating between Dombarton and Unanderra.

Yesterday I noticed pits, trenches and new signal bases on the up between Aylmerton and Yerrinbool. The end must be near for the upper quad signals between Picton and Aylmerton. Does anyone have the scheduled date for replacement? I imagine the section is the last in NSW with overhanging brackets?
