From what I know, you are looking at the destruction of the former Cars Office. |
Which for those not in the know, is now located to the rear Platform 1, adjacent Bourke Street VLP Booking Office next to the Melb. SCS Coach Termi...

A shot from today |
Is there a reason why the platform is so low? The tiny stub of the existing platform was lower, but i would have though they would have made it the same as the main southern bit, as well as building the new bit at that height.

The motorail dock is in front of the former signal box, north of the platforms. Construction was underway this afternoon, with the formwork for the concrete edges being placed so far.

North of Latrobe Street, and between the bank sidings and the bus road?

If you look closely at the photo of the platform 2 north end extension the broad gauge turns out into 2a road at the existing northern end of platform 2. the new extension is served only by standard gauge.
For future Nth East sg operations there will therefore be three separate standard gauge platform faces . Platform 1 (dead ended) . Platform 2 North (B), and Platform 2 Centre (A) . Both these last two faces are dual gauge with dual gauge loco run around available in both faces. Further a train on either gauge can arrive/depart to/from 2 Centre (A) via 2a Road, whilst a second train on either gauge occupies platform 2 North (B).

The motorail dock underway:
And the platform extension:
The new building mentioned earlier has been painted black, with white arrows on the sides. The top storey above the concrete is all slats - very odd looking.

That building toward Dudley Street is I believe for Mainco.
The CARS office , Yardmaster , No 1 Signal Box , EDI Maintenance Staff , Drivers Supervisors and V/Line Drivers & Drivers Management etc, will all be relocated into the building to be built on the former site of the CARS office etc at the end of platform 5&6, 4 Storeys.
Other recent work involved demolition of the tin shed next to the new relay room that still had an ad on it for the Great Southern Private Hotel, which featured "hot & cold running water" and had a 5 digit phone number .
Also tracks at the former railmotor depot have been ashphalted over where wher previously ballasted and the small platform near "the pit" road will go as well. This platform was used to service DERMS & Walker railcars, where heavy parts had to be installed or removed such as engines etc.
It will be interested to see how long it takes GSR to re instate the Motorail Wagon on the Overland Day service that runs 4 days a week, I do not hesitate to say that the car dock presently under construction may see one or two cars unloaded a week!! A lot of money spent indeed - for a non exsistant market.

Hopefully not long!
It's hard to say for a service that hasn't been there for a damn long time, it'll certainly see a peak at the start and then level out once the novelty wears back off and the advertising campaigns finish up... Personally, I'd love to do the trip with the SV8 coming along!
And anyway, a ramp and 200m of SG track can't be that expensive, can it?

One question about the duel gauge tracks along side the platforms at SCS (platform 1 & 2)
Is the common rail all on the one side or does It alternat from side to side to avoid the point blades of the broad gauge only turnouts, as It did with the former layout at Spencer Street Station (platform 1 & 2) ?

It does change sides, I would have to go there and take notes if you wanted to know what went where.

Heard that last Friday's Overland arrival with NR10 was inadvertently? routed into platform 1 at SCS, T371 later towed it out to South Dynon.
The XPT was reportedly held outside SCS until PL1 became vacant.

It would be good to see the XPT in platform 2.
