represent the narrow gauge wagon underframes under the XX, YX and YY types, regauged from broad gauge. I plan to build balsa wood bodies and attachthem to the underframes. I suppose I could kitbash the X wagons from a british open wagon.

The YY can be made from the SEM I/IA wagon (by shortening the sides and altering the doors)
The XX can be made from the SEM I/IA high side wagon
The instructions (with pics) are available in the Modeling the Railways of South Australia Convention www.mrsac.com from the years 2000 & 2001.
I would highly reccomend obtaining the entire series if you can as this is building into an invaluable resource for the modeler of railways of the SAR

Thaks Sarails, but I am, as mentioned already, I am planning to build my layout to Sn3.5 (4.75mm to the foot), so, they might look a bit too narrow, as they were coverted broad gauge wagons.

Any photos/diagrams

In the South Australiana collection of the Mortlock Library there is a very nice shot of a train of M and MM sheep vans at Cummins in 1933. Go to http://www.catalog.slsa.sa.gov.au:1084/search/c?SEARCH=B+18485 and click on 'view image'.

It is interesting that this slide says it was the 'first full train load of sheep' at Cummins.

What this may imply is that not a huge number of sheep wagons are needed to represent day-to-day operation, even in the 1920s.

Sheep was far less of a traffic on the Eyre Peninsula than on the 'mainland'.

The Pt Lincoln Dvn at times seemed ambivalent about sheep traffic. From 1945, they had 20 SN trucks as well as SFNs but presumably more than the traffic warranted, as in 1964-65, it being considered that good bogie underframes were going to waste under the SNs, the OSN class came into being, basically a shorter and wider OGN bulk open wagon built on the SN frames. At the same time, 8 SFNs were grabbed and converted to VFN vans.

By the 70s the only stock traffic of any substance was a shuttle from Duck Ponds feeding lots to Port Lincoln which was part of the live sheep trade. This involved eleven SFNs and a brake.

Looking through the Buckland Collection which had shots of a tour of the Division in 1977, photos show little evidence of sheep or cattle traffic. The only shot I found was a general goods consisting of an 830, one SFN and a brake. Now there's a train to make a government accountant's hair fall out . . .

In 1982 the Division received 6 SNs again, presumably as part of AN's broader plan to upgrade the fleet to bogie stock. However these SNs, including one optimistically repainted to AN corporate green in 1983, did not outlast the remaining 33 SFNs, all being written off together by June 1985.

Given you are going to build in S scale you might find it easier if you have a scale rule. Just in case you are not aware, the usual 'General' brand of steel model scale rule has S as well as HO and 1/4" scales. I also have a card one made by Data Sheets and there is another steel one made in New Zealand. Of course just using a calculator is another option.

I have devised a method of modelling the broad gauge vehicles that were converted to narrow gauge. Use an SEM HO undeframe kit, with brake gear removed, then lay a scale floor of your chosen material, then add styrene C channel at the appropriate width

Some suggestions for SAR 4 wheel wagon underframes in Sn3½:
Parkside Dundas OO scale PA08, BR/RCH 9FT. Underframe kit - $4.20.
Available form Woodpecker Hobbies at Pendle Hill in Sydney.
Wheel sets from North yard in NZ, 12.0mm dia, 8 spoke, #232/26 - $1.32 pair. That is 2 wheels and one 26mm long axle, assembled.
Pin point bearings also from Woodpecker's - $not much.
Floor has to be increased slightly in length and width. File off all of the moulded details from the solebars, replace with Evergren styrene 0.125" channel to match the increased floor length.
This is the basis of an SAR 7'6" wheelbase chassis for "C" open in S scale.
You could use 10ft chassis which comes out to 8'4" in S scale. Very close to the SAR 8'6" chassis for an "X" or "Y" open.
See AMRM August 1986 for plans and some great photos of 4 wheeled stock.

Does anyone know where I can get one of the Railwest Models WAGR "C" class kits?
I am interested in an unbuilt kit or built up model of any type.
