Just got the word that Sims Metal will start doing what they do best to the line on Monday. Any group that wants to salvage anything from the line will need to go through Sims.

Well, it was inevitable, sadly.
Pity the local council couldn't have rallied to save a very short section - say, one or two kilometres out of Peterborough - of track for preservation.
This would give the opportunity for future generations to perhaps restore some operations to the line.

From what I can gather reading through the Steamtown minutes, there will be a small section out of Peterborough left.

If I am not mistaken, the entire yard at Peterborough will be left intact upto the yard limits. The rails over Black Rock bridge will also be left in place.

"X moved x seconded that the line between the northern boundary of the CBH area to the northern side of the Pekina Bridge be retained as requested by Mr X CEO of District Council of Orroroo/Carrieton. CARRIED".

I'm not worried . . . that's life.
After 1956, it was the wrong line in the wrong gauge in the wrong place. And after 1970 it was a once a week operation. With all the photos of tours etc, people tend to forget how marginal it really was at actually justifying its existence.
AN don't deserve credit for a lot of things . . . but keeping the truncated Orroroo stub going till 1988 was an achievement.
And the nicer bit of the old transcontinental route (at the other end) is preserved and operating.
That's more than most redundant lines get by way of a memorial.

We-e-ell, I wouldn't go as far as to say preserved, but it is still there.

Does the council own the line? Or does the state? I would have thought it would return to the state if noone wanted it. At least the Cambrai line went to a useful cause.
Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.

Pretty sure it's State, but the council (and Steamtown) have control over it, hence being able to make the decision to rip it up.
It's a shame that Sims got the contract to remove the whole line, rather than allowing a "good cause" (PRR, NRM, etc) to have some. Sims would probably be charging three-times scrap value for all the material, which would make it unaffordable. Not to mention completely unsympathetic towards the railway preservation cause (but its not like they've cared for the last 50+ years. I think railways would be their #1 source of profit).

I am not sure but I think the State owned the below rail assets EG the land and the council through Steamtown owned the track. I could be wrong so do not quote me!

2001, the trolley is still at bruce. I saw it last Friday when I went to have a look at the area out there.
