How hard would it be to rebuild the BU's with a new (seconhand) engine?
An 8 or 12 cylinder 7FDL would be a possability.
A V16 251plus engine would be a far better idea... Twisted Evil


I guess you would really have to want a locomotive to rebuild the BUs. They are probably best forgotten, depeding on how much the frames were madified when ballasted as slug units.

Of course GTSA have a few spare 16-251 Plus engines removed from the withdrawn Robe units. I'm told they had a lot of problems with cracked heads, so a standard 16-251 might be a better bet, particularly if you are happy with 3000 to 3300 HP.

Merely an academic exercise! How about extending the frame and fitting a V18 instead? I just want a bigger, noiser ALCo to burn the Hills down! Very Happy
Pressman is right though it would be a huge amount of work digging out the concrete ballast but you never know seeing as the RL's are dead in the water they may feel inspired to tackle something else as equally stupid.



Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.

4.Leaks, holes and connections

Battery and charger (semi-annual)

1.Load, acid and specific gravity

3.Charger output (adjust if necessary)

Fuel system

1.Leaks, water, sediment checks
2. Day tank – float switch pump
3.Governor linkage

Coolant system (check only)

1.Antifreeze, radiator and cap
2.Leaks, hoses, belts and tension

Intake and exhaust (check only)

1.Air cleaner, turbocharger, muffler and traps
2.Leaks
3.Breather, flex pipe, rain cap

Generator

1.Diodes, end bearing, brushes and folder
2.A.C. wiring, exciter stator, over speed switch
3.Breakers

Controls

1.Voltage regulator, wiring relays, monitors and bulbs

Transfer switch

1.Time delays, exerciser clocks (adjust or reset as necessary)
2.Clean cabinet

Engine running

Hi All,

Actually CSX have about 200 slugs in road service they consist of old GP30 and GP35's that have been de-motored & coupled to GP40's and GP40-2's. CSX crews like having their GP30 & GP35 slugs lead for the "quiet" ride that they offer. Also they have RCPHG4 & RCPHG6 which are radio controlled units which were made from some B23-7's & C30-7's etc. Yard Slugs are mostly old SW1500's etc that have kept their traction equipment but have been beefed up in weight for low speed adhesion.

Hi All,

I forgot to add that Amtrak remotored some of their old Alco RS-3's which turned them into RS-3M's. They got mostly EMD 567 motors but kept almost everything else, they did get a new body shape which can be seen in the below link.
