Good Morning,

Yesterday I attended the opening of the Binnaway Railway Barracks after a huge restoration project was undertaken by the Binnaway Rail Heritage & Preservation Group.
This project was financed by the Federal Government, ARTC and the Orana group.
The restoration included the Asbestos Roof being removed and a new corrugated roof put on, complete stripping of the kitchen facilities with new cupboards and plumbing, the whole building repainted in Heritage colours, a Security system put in place and new bathroom.

The group is now using the Barracks for accommodation and have been fortunate to have many visitors to the town use the facilities.

The cost and who to contact can be sourced on the Website at,
www.freewebs.com/binnawayrail/

Regards,

Whilst I had a look at the photos, I actually shuddered at the prospect of actually paying to stay in them. Some time ago I drove past the old Goulburn barracks near loco, & noted they were also being used for the same porpuse.

Seeing them being used brought back too many bad memories for me with them, having to endure them in all weather conditions, freeze in the winter, where the hot water bottles nearly froze in the bed.

& we were sort of paid to stay in them, even when after many years of fighting they were air conditioned, they were still unpleasant.

BNY, was not a nice place to spend 24 hrs waiting for a return in, as the 2 pubs were owned by a brother & a sister at the other one, when going there you went to the first one, & ordered a 5oz, & if it stayed down you stayed there if not you went up to the other one, as they shared the profits between them.

The bowling club was the best but only opened on bowls days & at night for 5 hours.

On of the worst parts of going there was like all barracks in those days they were never locked, & after they installed washing facilities & hot water, you would get there & all the water was used up by a section of the local community. As it used to be wood fired & then replaced with off peak the wood was often taken & everyone knows that off peak is just that.

After keys were supplied things at least improved, & even the cooking utensils tended to stay.

Although I will say this, despite the bad memories, it is good to see these parts of railway history preserved instead of being pulled down as so many structures have been in the past.

So when you got back from there the missus would ask "Where you been?"

"Binnaway" you'd reply.

I've lived in shearers' quarters out west and they couldn't be any worse. No pub or anything out there either. Still I sure as hell wouldn't pay to stay in them again either!

Nice to see them being saved rather than demolished though! What are the Cooma barracks used for now?

Sometimes I feel like a pelican. Which ever way I look there's an enormous bill in front of me. Blackadder.

Hi Warks,

As far as I am aware the cooma barracks are used by members who travel from Sydney, or where ever they come from when they visit.

Good to hear about the resto!

It's a shame Enfield barracks got demolished. It would have made an excellent Brothel.

There must have been 100 rooms, in an Industrial area too.

Actually that was a term used to describe pretty well everyone of the old barracks right across the state. Trouble was that they were not good enough to be described that way.

Yer've never binnaway till yer've binnaway stayed in a railway barracks. Full Stop

I have stayed at the baracks at Enfield once as well as those at Lithgow, Goulburn and Broadmeadow when I worked at FreightCorp. Broadmeadows were fairly modern and can't complain about them really.

I no longer work at Freight Corp/ Pac Nat and would consider staying at the baracks in Binnaway as part of a planned buff trip in the fututre.

I don't know how many trains pass through Binnaway nowadays - both times I have been their, there has benn no trains running, although the first time I was their a 48 class was shutdown in the yard.

if a train stilll runs into/out of Binnaway, I will prolly stay their overnight so I can actually film/photograph one coming and going!

Pacnats 8521/5822. 40 NGPF/KF's usually behind an 81 and 2/3 48's ex Moree to and from Manildra. Runs empty to Moree and loaded on the return. Runs every two or so days.

Pacnat 5324?/3523? another 40 wagon job with 81's and 48's. Dont know how often it runs, it was running today though.

Depending on the crew sometimes these jobs will have the 48 in the lead between Binnaway and Werris Creek. We had 48146/4886/8130/8171 in that order the other night ex Binnaway for the creek on 8521.

El zorro's 1QM5? wheat trains run around at Binnaway ex Melbourne, El Zorro is at Premer loading today, should be back out tonight or tommorow morning. SCT G's, GM36, EL's are regular power on these, their is two El zorro rakes running into the north west via Binnaway. Train on average every 3 or 4 days.

Apart from that the occasional diverted wheatie.

Regards,
Scott

NSWRTM123, The old barracks at MSV have been derelict 4 years, the only people who use them are few homeless bums.
