EDIT - I think I found the answer to my own question - NHSF (not to be confused with NHSH coal hoppers). I do vaguely remember them being unusual in not having the NDxx coding.

Biqua yeah mate i looked through my pics and yeah that seems to be the only difference to the coding.
Hendo not real sure mate they could be but the railcorp ones first came from BHP port kembla and later ones were new built.

Tony they are Hydraulic but air activated so you could say both realy as the bottom part of the ram is filled with oil.

42101 from what I have heard is that southern Coal have 3 rakes onloan at the moment 2 rakes of those NHVF's and a rake of NHTF's. Northern coal have atleast 1 rake of Southern coals NHFF type hoppers for used to the Gunnedah basin.
Also the NHVF's can't be used on the Gunnedah area 72 wagon rakes and with the Stratford coalies now worked withe the NHPH's. The NHVF's have restricted areas of operation and are more than likely going to remain a long term fixture of the Southern/Western areas.
