The sad thing is, I'm 27 and I already sound like an old fart. That shows you how backwards and restrictive our society has become in just the last 5 years. It's hard to believe that as recently as 2004 we had tours with photostops (the ARE Boort trip in April 04 was the last one IIRC).

Well I'm 17 and just managed to make some of the last photostop trips: most notably the double-Rs to Wycheproof in '03.

Thinking back to those trips makes even me feel old! Shocked

I never thought much about those trips in the late 80's and 90's but really wish I'd gone on a few more. I didn't go on many of the mainline trips (e.g. Ballarat / Bendigo) but preferred the goods only lines or lines not long to close. Plenty of photostops and nobody ever lost an eye climbing out of a carriage that wasn't at a platform. And we never derailed anywhere because the track wasn't class A with concrete sleepers and 60 Kg rail.

My updated pics here - and the Forsayth Goods here!

Only trip with real photostops that I can remember going was the Piangle Pass trip. The last time it ran (R761, ended up getting back to SSS around midnight, I think it was about 98, not sure).

But I do remember getting off at Piangle, and a little way outside Piangle, all without platforms Smile

It's sad that this can't be done anymore. Certainly removes some of the fun from the trip Sad

It's one of the cheapest weekenders in have seen in a long time and i lay money on that it could be the cheapest weekender going from now on. Think of Albury's planned weekender. $600 or $650 Just for a seat. About $800 for a sleeper. I'm sure Les will correct me if im wrong

I wouldn't consider it to be particularily expensive for what you are getting. $180 return for a sit-up seat & two nights is not a bad deal and it is to a line that only sees the odd grain train and has not see pax trains since the Sea Lake railmotor finished in the 1970s, not to somewhere you can go to by train unless you are a driving a grain train.

Rossco T's site has some pictures of Whycheproof station at: http://www.vicrailstations.com/Kulwin/Wycheproof/Wycheproof.html

Will S313 be on the rear? Question

There is an updated brochure for this charter in October. Please take some time to read through this marvellous brochure that the local people in Wycheproof have made up for everyone. This is really going to be a sensational weekend with lots to do and see, well worth the money i rekon... Plus there also could be a few surprises thrown in the mix.

Any questions, please dont hesitate to pm me or ask on the open forum.

Could the few surprises be that it:
1. runs on time ?
2. doesn't run out of coal ?
3. doesn't get blocked by VLP ?

1. R711 will run it
2. It will run early!
3. Steamrail will fine VLP for holding them up!

I was just thimk recently, seeing the loco is almost right to role, that it could likely feature on at least one leg of this trip, that being Ballarat (or bacchus Marsh) back to Melb. SCS then Newport, works up light engine to The Marsh or Ballarat, then completes its long overdue load trial on the way back to Melb. SCS triple heading with R761 & S313...

I would suggest that to everyone on here, operational means hauling a train on the main line, and that is not happening.
R711 will not be operational this year, and probably most of next year unless something amazing happens to satisfy the requirements of both VLP and the Drivers Union, and until these conditions are met it wont be operational let alone accredited.
