(The only times you would struggle to get a seat from Lithgow through to Bathurst are the Easter Weekend, and around the Bathurst 1000) |
If you are big on a ( somewhat ) decent ride, you could always, get the XPT. (don't get a countrylink bus, they are seriously god-awful)
My two cents

I find the CountryLink Coaches too be ok...
(Althrough their are two types of coach available, esp. if yu have the misfortune to be travelling from Albury if it's a XPT replacem't, south of the border... You get a Wangaratta Coaches VLP Livery with Countrylink in the desto section )
I've done the Federal City Express Coach Service return at least twice... I found the coach to be quite comfortable... I can put up with a coach for say 2.5Hrs, after that I begin to get a bit pissed...

Nope - why would they, the bus takes half the time of the train, and is cheaper for them to operate, as well as allowing them to seervice places which they otherwise wouldn't be able to service on the train.

Ticket can only be purchased on the day (assuming a standard single/return), Coach seats can be booked (7 days???) in advance.
Here or there

Things might have changed since I was out in Bathurst, but most of the Friday coaches to Lithgow and the returning Sunday coaches were always pretty packed with uni students from the Charles Sturt Bathurst campus going home for weekends. |
Possibly yes, haven't heard of it causing any problems but would be stretching the availability. |
Having worked at Lithgow for a number of years, there are quite a few times during the year that seats are hard to come by. There were many times I had to kick passengers out of the waiting rooms at 2230 when we closed the station who were waiting til morning to get their seat. (special arrangements are made, where possible, to avoid people not getting home mind you.)
Cityrail have 10 seats reserved for walk up passengers each coach (this includes phoned through from other stations). School holidays and Bathurst special events and festivals always exhaust the seats quickly.
And then??????
