Well if it helps there is a 12 class boiler sitting at Thirlmere, so there is a peice of the puzzle if someone was to get the 12 class running or even do a swap with whoever gets 1308 for boilers.
Anything is possible.

Let me take the idea one step further, move the entire collection from Thirlmere to Broadmeadow. That would be a lot closer to the original Enfield museum concept than having operations shoehorned into a size restricted site at Thirlmere .
A RTM Northern Division is good idea, but I don't think the people at the RTM HQ and the ORH would been keen on potential "Rebels" establishing bases for obvious reasons.
Valley Heights was a different matter, it was established well before all the smeg in recent years. |
Bugmenot,
The whole idea about a 'Northern division' of the RTM is NOT a rebellious idea. It is about preserving NSW rollingstock, and finally getting Broadmeadow roundhouse restored also. Simple as that. Those who have said they are keen on the idea so far aren't concerned for the differences of the past, or recent years, we just want to make the most of the current situation for the good of NSW rail heritage preservation into the future. Most of said people are aged from their teens to their early 30's and want to have older people to learn from involved in it also.
Up until now, there hasn't been this sort of opportunity present itself in the Newcastle area.

I can see the benifits in Broadmeadow... With Maitland & RVRM & the history of the SMR, plus the BHP Newcastle Steel works & it's internal railway, with all this in the region, a Hunter Division of the RTM would thrive I would think... What better addition to HV Steamfest... By getting BM Loco up & running as a preserved working Heritage Exhibit area, provides the perfect place to stable the steamers during the event... As well as say have 2 locos restored & permantly stabled here operational, with say 6 Pass Cars for use in the Nthn Region...

I never said a RTM Northern division was a bad idea, read my last post in full.
I just think it will never happen.
If you wish to try then good luck to you.

And perhaps some FO cars
With the locomotives I think mabey 3085 would be nice for the roundhouse and do replica runs of some of the old local services that were once common with 30 class tanks.
Just an idea.

Not to rain on your parade SMR30, but IIRC, 3085 hasn't run since the 70s.

Has there been any consideration by the custodians of these relocated items (either RTM / ORH) to perhaps "black oil" the locomotives and the Lo 32 tender and any other exposed steel elements
Given that BMD loco depot is located only 4.0km approx. (in a straight line) from a coastal "salt laden" environment? quite a change from the dryer Thirlmere which is a approx. 40.0km from the coast?
It may help to stablise any further detoriation / rust from the salt laden air and neutralise any possible graffiti strike? more than an aesthetic coat of black paint?
Just an idea

While it is a good idea catchpoint I presume that some kind of protection such as black oiling was done before they left for Broadmeadow if you really need to have the information just ring the Museum and ask.

So why is an organisation, that is out of room to store projects, that they're incapable of maintaining, being given the responsibility of more ?
Furthermore, why would a northern site take off, when the general consensus is to reduce as many sites into one (sic) super site ?
It just doesn't make sense...
May be young'n'dumb, yet unlike some, I've heart!

I have some sad news people.
I have just heard that the graffiti vandals have attacked all stored items stored at BMD over the past weekend.
More details as they come to hand
This is one of the reasons why we wanted to have a northern division even if it was only for the duration of the storage period

Exactly what damage.
With the info I recieved yesterday about the supposed Vandal attack, I made enquires this morning, and after a visual inspection of the stored stock, I can now deny any reported vandal/grafitti attacks.
Also these items are under 24 hour secruity.
