He does miss out on some of us though - had the model come out to the same standards we see from TrainO, Eureka, and Auscision, I would have gotten one despite it being non-essential to my roster. With the number of errors it has, then unless I can pick one up extremly cheap then I won't bother, because with the amount of work that needs doing to correct it, it's not worth the price they are charging. I am also paranoid to preorder an 81 as I don't know how accurate a model it will actually be after seeing this. I have nothing against preordering from those I know produce a quality model, but I don't know if Austrains deserves to be in that group.

I'm in the same boat as you biqua. I want to preorder 4 81's but this does put me off abit. Then again if we pay the preorder price of 245 now it would hurt paying 300 for any mistakes later.
I was thinking today that the DL was meant to be Austrains surprise loco maybe the tooling was done long ago before the recent high quality models. Their Y class is nice bit of kit and seems strange to take a step backwards.
Will be interesting reading the next Austrains newsletter, will JE take resposibilty for the errors or pass the buck.

I was thinking of adding one of these to my lineup, but after all the less than favorable comments, I think I'll spend my hard earned on another Auscision, or Trainorama Loco. Am I right in assuming their were not as many issues with the Austrains Y class

looking at the photos that others have posted, even with all the mistakes that all can see, these models are still 10 times better then any of the kits that I have put togather.

Amen brother, and that is exactly what I am doing. I've had my Lloyd's DL kit for ages. I hum & hah over whether or not to order an Austrains DL.
Even before they were released I decided I stick to my Lloyd's kit and save my dollars for other models from other marques!
Judging by the sentiment here a lot of modellers, collectors feel burnt that over the years we paid "x" amount of dollars for a particular model. Then some new players come along and we pay the same or less amount of scratch for a loco, however when we open the lid of the box and we get that "WOW" factor which is priceless!
Add to that the smart ar$e comments, threats, poor responses etc you get from the owner, it's any wonder he gets flamed.
I've spoken to the owners/helpers/employees of other manufactures at length about all sorts of things, even just $hit in general. That's what this hobby is suppose to be all about. There's enough bitching in life, we don't need it in our hobby.
Now on a positive note, I am hoping the G's and BL's I'm after arrive and have the "wow" factor included!

The wow factor for me regarding the DL's was the fact that Austrains woke up and put the right shade of PN blue on his models rather then his dark version as seen on the PN NR's they had released.
Im expecting good things in the future regarding PN loco's and wagons coming from Austrains.. infact ive already placed an order for a rake of VPCX Hoppers..
Cheers Adam

A partial apology to Austrains on one point - looking at http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p1113197.htm#1113197 I see DL36 has the #2 end MU recepticles up near the handrail - this led me to search through my photos again, and search on the web - DL38 which I know for a fact has the lower recepticles had higher ones earlier in life judging by this photo of cpdbear's - http://cpdbear.fotopic.net/p46031068.html
I now have to assume they were relocated across the class, so being higher up may indeed be correct for earlier versions, but remains incorrect for the newer versions.

has anybody else found upside down numbers on the Charcoal NR liveried DLs? im still thinking of getting one at Hurstville, but im not gonna fork out $260 for something which is blatantly incorrect, isnt that y the West Coast Ts had ~$100 dropped of their price for an obvious mistake?
i might end up getting on of the light grey DLs, see how i feel at the time.

Off topic, at least model type wise. When I initially preordered the 35cl I did so with some reservations, & only after seeing the first samples, which looked ok. Since then I saw the various stepped samples & decided to take the plunge.
Despite the issues with the 35, I found it more than acceptable, & with sound at the EB price, better value than the DJH/ARkits version (if you could get one). The thing to me which I sort of wondered with the 35cl is similar to what you said in the 2nd paragraph, re the tooling of the DL.
I know that JE had the 35cl planned & was started some 8 years ago, or there abouts, & then canned it owing to lack of interest or whatever, the annoucement of its resurection stated that circumstances had changed or similar.
I would therefore think the circumstances being more interest, & competitors in the market & sales going well. Thus the resurection could easilly be done, using the majority of the work already completed (which is sensible), thus saving a fair start up cost.
On that scale, perhaps we are seeing these models as a result of older die sets or whatever, the thing is we need to choose what we get, based on that, or the probable higher costs that totally new models are going to bring.
The older dies, would have to have extensive work done (even if it was possible) to bring them up to scratch, & to abandon them if, they cannot be reworked would add a fair bit on the costs of new models, & I am referring to models that have had money spent & then stalled.
