Interesting to note that in a typically Public Service bureaucratic manner the reason given for not being able to carry surfboards etc on the replacement buses is "because the Ticketing Manual says it is not allowed." Sir Humphrey would be proud and pleased !!!

Sorry mate I do not make the rules, I am just putting up there what was on Connex webpage, because I know that there will be people saying "Connex never told us about this" and so on and so forth.

If you do not agree with the Rules set out by the DOT then do not use the busses as this rule has been in play for a hell of a long time.

What exactly does this "improvement work" entail?

Are Connex going to be replacing a sizable amount of rail or just patching the odd place here and there?

Thats what I been thinking as but for now I do not think any thing will be happerning. People have said "The Goverment has told connex to reopen" and others are saying "it's not going to open" So I do not know whats going on.

One good thing with New Street being shut is there are kids back on the street playing so at least it's had an up side to it being closed.

Train replacement buses are always crowded, and a surfboard or bike just plain won't fit.

mjja,
yes, that is so true, but it it is about providing service. If you take out a six car train, then you must replace it with a set of buses with enough capacity for the needs of all passengers. You cannot say that because you only chose to provide one bus, that some of the passengers cannot board or that you must run it to 'crush loads'. A bus requires more skill for those standing than does a train.

it was update to the following:

New rules regarding the carriage of bicycles and
surfboards on public transport have been introduced.

Folding Bicycles

Folding bicycles can be carried free on metropolitan trains, trams and buses; V/Line trains and coaches, and regional town bus services at any time. Folding bicycles must
not exceed the dimensions of 79cm long x 59cm high x 36cm wide and must be folded
up and stowed in a bag before boarding. Folding bicycles must not obstruct
passageways or doorways and not inconvenience other passengers.

A folding bicycle has small wheels and frame latches allowing the frame to be collapsed. Regular bicycles of any size, with or without wheels, are not considered folding bicycles and are subject to the conditions below regarding bicycles on public
transport.

On metropolitan buses folding bicycles cannot be stored in parcel racks. On V/Line trains and coaches, folding bicycles cannot be stored in overhead luggage racks.

Bicycles Metropolitan Trains

Bicycles can be carried free on metropolitan trains at any time. As a courtesy to fellow passengers, cyclists are requested to avoid heavily congested carriages. Cyclists must not board at the first door of the first carriage at any time, as this area is reserved for
passengers in wheelchairs. Bicycles must not obstruct passageways or doorways and must not inconvenience other passengers.

Metropolitan Trams, Metropolitan Buses, Regional Town Buses, V/Line Coaches Bicycles are not permitted on these services at any time, with the exception of folding bicycles (see above).

V/Line Trains
Bicycles can be carried free on V/Line trains at any time. As a courtesy to fellow passengers, cyclists are requested to avoid heavily congested carriages. Bicycles must not obstruct passageways or doorways and must not inconvenience other passengers.

from V/Line website

On coaches

Generally, V/Line coaches do not carry bicycles, surfboards, surf skis, sailboards, canoes and similar items.

There is an exception for coach services along coastal routes where surfboards and boogie boards may be carried, subject to available space on the day of travel.

Passengers are reminded that this applies to both the forward and return legs of the journey.

Has anyone seen what they are doing to the line while the line is closed?

It would be interesting to see.

I just hope they are doing something about the drainage on that line. Something of a flooding problem from time to time.
