I know they used to run stuff via the shore when there was work on in the metrop years ago but one would think they would consider running a few express interurbans up the shore with crossing loops at St Leonards, Lindfield and Gordon. Does anyone think this would make the trip quicker?
How come they never did this?

I think the problem its the time. The shore is pretty much at maximum capacity in peak and with urbans running up the ar$e of all stoppers it wouldn't go quciker anyway.
V sets going via the shore would have to be 6 cars then and take longer to load at Central, then you would have to stop them at Town Hall and Wynyard (even if you didn't they would be right up the bum of the Suburban).
Then where would they stop? North Sydney, St Leanords, Chatswood, Gordon, Hornsby? They may as well be all stopers.
I think its a good idea in theory but if it where to be put in place it wouldn't work.
Hope that sheds some light,
Kaine

Aren't there a couple of peak hour services to Wyong that go via the North Shore?
Bring the 3900s back to Brisbane
Bring Karlsruhe Tramtrains to Australian cities
Extend the proposed Metro to Taylor Square
Extend the Gold Coast line to the Tweed

Yeah, all of them are 8 Car Tangaras or OSCars. All goto Wyong but 205 run which terminates at Gosford.

I reckon if you ran one out of North Sydney stopping Chatswood Hornsby Woy Woy with the afore mentioned loops for the locals to cross it would be packed out.

most of the trains are already packed out!
Then you whould have to spend a few 100.000 on building these crossing loops just for one service,
Then you whould have to pull a train from another service to put on this service, the passengers who lost a service whould be unhappy to join another one at another time makeing the people on them trains pissed.
then the people on this new service whould be pissed because this train is late because something on the shore is stuffed and they cant get through.
so do you still think its a good idear?

Perhaps an Oscar, running Morth Sydney, St. Leonards, Chatswood, Epping, Hornsby and then onwards to Wyong? This would serve the CBD's of North Sydney and Chatswood, also the St. Leonards area (with RNS Hospital there, as well as a large number of offices, etc). Starting the service at North Sydney (rather than at Central and through the underground) would ensure that there would still be reasonable seating available for passengers from these locations.
ANy thoughts?

Not a bad idea. It would be even better if a platform could be built at the North Sydney Car sidings and have a connecting ferry service to the city.

I'd be concerned that such an arrangement would reduce the number of pathways from North Sydney to Redfern. North Sydney is more an extension of the Sydney CBD than a separate commercial centre. People who work in North Sydney and live anywhere other than on the north shore line (save the Central Coast) are likely to approach North Sydney / Milson's Point via the bridge. You'd want to maximise the number of possible movements between North Sydney and Central.
Even if it doesn't stop at Town Hall, it is likely that passengers wanting to use it would catch a suburban service across the bridge to North Sydney. If you wanted to avoid the train being overcrowded by suburban passengers, u-stops might be the answer.

Sorry Speed, not sure who you are referring to there, since you didn't quote anything. If you are referring to my post, I can't see how starting a train at North Sydney and sending it north would reduce the number of paths between North Sydney and Redfern. The northbound train would, presumably, be leaving from platofrm 3 (if the track and signalling arrangements allowed for this).
North Sydney really is a seperate CBD, there is a HUGE amount of people who work there, a lot of who commute north (and is one of the reasons why there is a Central to Mental Coast service via the Shore, to provide these North Sydney/Chatswood commuters with a direct service).

Would sending trains to Newcastle via the Shore be more viable if a second harbour crossing was built?

If North Sydney already has four platforms and tunnels it would give the car sidings plenty to do.
How about running some freight up the shore on dogwatch as well, the NRs and CLPs would look good on the bridge.
